..Beaver!! Those little furry creatures are being (ab)used for straps now as well! I ordered my beaver tan strap at TCStraps and received it within a week, including a pre-Vendome Panerai-style buckle and the tubes for the strap. These tubes are probably protectors for the strap.

The strap is made by Camille Fournet in Paris and qualitywise very well crafted!

I never knew Beavers had such a ‘padded’ skin, anyway, I am happy again!

Womens Watches

Zenith

Besides the typical diamond studded quartz watches, women seem to be into mechicals as well. At least, if we have to believe the marketeers at (for example) Zenith and Omega who launched ladies watches with mechanical movements.

TimeZone seems to jump into this with their Watch Woman forum! However, besides the ‘regular’ ladies Rolex Date-Justs, Omega Constellations, JeagerLeCoultre Reversos and Ebel watches, I see a lot of these female watchcollectors/fanatics wearing mens watches.

Anyway, as long as the ‘trend’ is big watches, I still see women wearing Rolex Sea-Dwellers, Submariners, Breitling and in some cases even Panarai 44mm watches. I do think they look cool on womens wrists, but what if the trend goes ’smaller’ again? Back to ladies watches? Or will there be unisex watches in the same size?

Oh well, we’ll see. I have yet to see a woman wearing a mechanical Zenith or Omega Speedmaster ladies model.

As you probably all have seen (at least the people who watch the Olympic Games), Swatch is (again) the official timekeeper of the games. They use the Omega Swim-O-Matic for timing the swim competitions! Omega also designed other timing devices, check their http://www.omegatiming.com/ site for more info.

Anyway, reason for Swatch to introduce a few Olympic Games specials. Like the Pheidippides, in a very nice and special giftbox.

Vintage watches #2

I strumbled across the Elgin Watch Collectors site, which is quite impressive and usefull for collectors of vintage (Elgin) watches. Especially when you need to indentify a certain watch when you found one on eBay or at a watchfair. Another useful link on vintages watches is Paul’s site on Gruen watches, although it is more about history on Gruen watches. If you are looking for a nice affordable vintage rectangular watch, those two brands (and thus websites) might come in handy.

Vintage Zodiacs is another site on vintage watches you might like to visit. The navigation is a bit odd (through the pulldown-menus), but it contains a nice collection of images and information on vintage Zodiac watches.

If you need a list of online dealers for vintage watches, check the dealer pages at Chuck Maddox’s site.

Watch straps

Besides replacing straps when one is worn out, I am probably not the only one who think it is fun to switch straps once in a while to give a watch a different look.

Ever tried to buy a strap for your watch from the original manufacturer? Ever found a tray of Omega straps at the Omega dealer or a tray of IWC straps at the IWC dealer? It is not easy to get accessoires like straps and buckles at your dealer, especially when it is about watchmanufacturer accessoires. Only a few brands have their dealers stocked with buckles and straps, like Sinn, Panerai and I was at one time lucky at an Omega dealer :-)

Usually, the only other brand for straps at jewelers is Hirsch. However, I can’t find myself wearing a 20 Euro strap on a +2000 Euro watch. The quality of the watch and the quality of the strap should be equal in my opinion.

I did some surfing and came up with a few online dealers of straps, which can be ordered online as well. I didn’t have personal experience with all of them, but had some rather good feedback on all of them.

New for me is TC Straps, which have a nice selection of leather straps in croco, calf and ostrich. For Panerai as well, because these have a rather ‘large’ width and not every strapbrand carries these sizes. I liked especially their Firenze Deluxe series. They also have buckles in stock for Panerais, not the original, but Pre-V style in 22 and 24mm. Prices are quite high at first sight, but the finish on these straps looks to be of very high quality.

One of the largest selections (and made on request is also possible) can be found at Banda. They carry croco, rubber and even stingray straps. Available from very small (ladies) sizes to Panerai-sizes. I found the Navy-blue Stingray quite interesting for sports/diving watches. They also have buckles and folding clasps in stock and are included with some straps. Prices are very fair!

Sirtoli has a crappy website but it seems that most customers who report their experiences on TimeZone of WatchUseek are very happy with their straps. They carry a lot of Louisiana croco straps.

I have very good personal experience with the straps by Officina Italia Bros, carried by my favorite watch-store in The Hague. I personally have a croco strap, lizard and python strap from their collection. The python is a bit ‘kinky’ but very impressive. They do have larger sizes for Panerai on request. All handmade in Italy.

Update: Padraig @ WatchUseek came up with The Big Watch Boutique for elephant, python and other sorts of leather for your ‘big’ watch!

Become a watchmaker by watching videos

I saw this one popping up at my GoogleAds on the right of this page and the text made me curious. “You’ll be repairing in a few hours. Makes a great home business.” If you want to get beat-up by angry customers maybe…

Becoming a watchmaker by watching videos how it should be done… 5 Videos for 99 USD. I don’t know about this one.. ..I think I would rather give my 99 USD to my watchmaker when something should be done.

International (Wrist)Watch Magazine

IW asks for reader feedback via the forum of WatchUSeek. I don’t think very high of this magazine, and prefer German watch magazines for their in-depth articles and knowledge. However, maybe a poll like this changes it all and will make the magazine better than before. At least they should get rid off the articles on watches of brands that advertize on the same page :-) Here in The Netherlands we have a magazine called ‘Watching’ which suffered from the same problems as IW does, but got some serious WIS-injection. So there is hope!

Update! It was not meant to trash the magazine, but to give some usefull pointers. In my eyes the editors of the magazine should be able to bend all critisism from negative to positive (for their magazine) anyway. However, John Holbrook, one of the contributors to the magazine posted a new poll here, and this time clearly explains how it should be done…

Unlike some other people, I also think Patek Philippe is the best watchbrand available! Artie, a member of TimeZone, made as poll to ask what YOU think is the second best watchbrand. Check it out!

Is this one of the 2nd best brands?

Da bling bling….

Eliot S wrote at WatchUSeek’s WatchCentral:

‘Comedian Jamie Foxx enjoyed his experience of working with Tom Cruise on Collateral so much, he bought the actor a $20,000 diamond watch as a sign of gratitude. Foxx missed out on the opportunity to work with Cruise on 1996’s Jerry Maguire, when he lost the role to Cuba Gooding Jr. But while working with Cruise on Collateral, the pair became close pals and Foxx decided to mark their newfound friendship with an 8.5 carat King A1 Avianne & Co watch.”

What are YOU wearing today?

At WatchUSeek it is very common to ask others what they are wearing that day! Here is an example of such a thread, and maybe if you have a picture online of your watch, you can participate!

Besides the (most times) nice pictures of the watches, I would like to know why someone picked a certain watch from his collection to be worn that day. That’s always a struggle when you have more then one nice watch. I chose a vintage Rolex Date-Just for today, just because it is a no-nonsense watch with a date feature and classic design. Fits perfectly under my sleeve (which is not the case when wearing one of my diver watches) and the 14kt white gold lunette makes me smile everytime I check the time! :-)

Dive…

A whole genre of watches is built to see the water… Dive watches! Personally, I don’t dive or even swim, but I do have some in my collection because I like the look and feel of them. Among them is even quite a professional diver, the Rolex Sea-Dweller. Equation of Time is a watchportal that has quite a few loyal visitors and one of their fora is the dive watch forum. Give them a visit!

Great site! I will put this one in my links-section! Also noticed John uses the same software as this watch weblog website, from Wordpress. I hope that more watch weblogs will pop-up in the future, so we can really use the trackback features of this software and ‘concept’.

Watchphotography

SteveS from NJ complains over at the Paneristi Forum that he dislikes the reflection in his photos of his Panerai BlackSeal. However, I feel that in everyday life, you see reflections in watches as well. So why try to hide it on a picture? There are some skilled photographers amongst watchcollectors, like John Holbrook II, who are able to make pictures of watches without reflections. These pictures are in some cases even better than the ones in the brand’s catalogue, however, this is not the way you see your watch when wearing it ofcourse.
