The Last Queen’s Day – Fratellowatches Features Orange Watches

Queen’s Day!

It is Queen’s Day in The Netherlands! The last one though, as Willem-Alexander van Oranje is King of The Netherlands as of the 30th of April 2013. So next year, we will have a King’s Day on the 27th of April (his birthday). Or actually, in 2015, as the 27th of April in 2014 is on a Sunday (and it will be held a day earlier).

We wish all our fellow Dutch people a nice Queen’s Day and hope they enjoy the crowning of Willem-Alexander. After 33 years as the Netherlands’ head of state, Queen Beatrix will formally abdicate today. Rumour goes that our new King, Willem-Alexander, also loves watches. We’ve found a photo of him, wearing a Rolex Datejust.

Royal Watches

Anyway, the Fratellowatches team is in Baselworld this year and can’t celebrate our Queen’s Day properly (as pictured above). Therefore, we decided to do a celebration in style and picture all the orange watches we saw during this year’s Baselworld. Orange is ‘our’ national colour and we were able to find some watches with orange straps, hands, dials and even one with a rotor.

Not all models are introduced this year, but all the brands you will see in this article were very happy to cooperate with us. So some of them were able to hand over watches that were already introduced in previous years but were available for a picture.

Kyboe And DJ Antoine

Outside the Baselworld building, we ran into DJ Antoine (Antoine Konrad). You might know him from “Welcome to St Tropez” and “La Bella Vita“. DJ Antoine is wearing his orange Kyboe watches.

Willem-Alexander van Oranje

We wish Willem-Alexander all the best and we hope that the future King’s Day celebrations will be as nice as our Queen’s Days. We also hope to spot him more often with nice watches as well. We had to do our very best to find him wearing a watch on photos we’ve seen on the internet. In the end, we’ve found Willem-Alexander wearing a Rolex Datejust on this picture. We also know that our new Queen Maxima has a Rolex. A crown for a crown!

The Last Queens Day Fratellowatches Features Orange Watches

We’d like to thank all the watch brands for their cooperation. All of them responded and we even did extra appointments to have them search for a suitable (orange) timepiece. Much appreciated.

Introduction Gronefeld One Hertz Techniek Nocturne – Live Pictures

It is with great pride that we introduce the latest and last version of the Dutch made Grönefeld One Hertz. We’ve been a fan of the Grönefeld One Hertz since the day it was introduced to us in stainless steel, red gold and since last year, also in titanium (Fire and Ice editions) and platinum. And now, here it is, the latest and last edition of the Grönefeld One Hertz family: Techniek and Techniek Nocturne. All pictures can be clicked-on for high resolution images.

Introduction Gronefeld One Hertz Techniek Nocturne Live Pictures

The Grönefeld One Hertz Techniek has – of course – the same complication as the other One Hertz editions, which is a ‘seconde morte’ or dead beat complication. The Techniek comes in two different flavors, a titanium version and a titanium version with DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) treatment, the Nocturne. The Nocturne is the version we got our hands-on just before release date (17th of January 2013).

In the past, we’ve written an article about its inner workings (movement caliber G-02) and a Grönefeld One Hertz hands-on review. Bart and Tim Grönefeld were so kind to us to lend us one of their new pieces in order to have a closer look and to be able to photograph it properly.

During our precious time with this open-worked dial titanium DLC version of the Grönefeld One Hertz Techniek, we were able to do some macro work on the caliber G-02 movement. The finish on this timepiece is of an incredible high level. Hand finished and executed with the utmost care and precision.

The Grönefeld One Hertz Techniek Nocturne is incredibly light-weight on the wrist, very comfortable. Although it is very unlikely that Grönefeld will ever produce a sports watch, the DLC edition does give the watch a more casual look than the other editions of the One Hertz do. Even the Fire and Ice editions are more classic looking timepieces. So, if you are looking for a stealth timepiece from an independent watchmaker that does have a neat complication and a lot of craftsmanship, the One Hertz Techniek Nocturne might be the right watch for you.

More about the people behind Grönefeld Exclusive Timepieces can be found here.

The price of the One Hertz Techniek is: 49.500 Euro (excl VAT) and 52.500 (excl VAT) for the Tehcniek Nocturne (DLC).

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

Once in a while, Fratellowatches visits the Grönefeld workshop in Oldenzaal, The Netherlands, so see what’s happening and catch-up with Bart and Tim Grönefeld.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

This time, we decided to execute our visit properly and in style. The Fratellowatches team went on tour with two Porsche 911 (997) cars and a Ferrari F355. Bart and Tim Grönefeld joined in their Cobra sports car. After shooting pictures in the Grönefeld workshop, we drove to this wonderful historical location in the east part of The Netherlands and do some extra photo shoots.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

The whole setting of exclusive, perfectly built and designed cars, a beautiful Dutch historical location (Singraven property) and a hand ful of high-end haute horlogerie timepieces was perfect.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

We have been covering Grönefeld’s One Hertz timepiece in the past (here and here) so we will refrain from explaining the inner workings of this magnificent timepiece (click here if you do want to read it). Ever since Grönefeld won the TimeZone Watch of the Year 2011 award, no other serious high-end luxury brand can ignore them anymore. Grönefeld is on the global map of haute horlogerie.

Let’s start at the beginning, our arrival at the Grönefeld Exclusive Timepieces head quarters in Oldenzaal. After greeting our watch making friends (and having some espresso to recover from the trip), we headed to the work shop that is located right above the boutique where they sell their watches to customers.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

Bart and Tim have 7 highly skilled and motivated people that work on their precious timepieces. Their work is mainly to finish the parts of the One Hertz watches.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

The finishing of screws and bridges consumes a lot of time and a lot of visual checks are necessary to deliver only the best for their watches. The finish of one tiny bridge takes up to 2 hours of work. If all the parts are there, the whole process of manufacturing a watch takes up to 5 – 6 weeks for one full time employee.

Quality in everything they do, that’s their motto. Whether it is the about the beautiful alligator strap, the finish of the clasp or the tiny screws in the movement. If something is not up to their (high) standards, it doesn’t leave their workshop.

Manufacturing their hand made watches is a long and painstaking process and can’t be compared to the mass produced big label watches where a lot of the work has been automated or simplified. Although independent watchmaking is a hot topic these days, only few of these brands can measure themselves with these guys from Oldenzaal.

With a superb education at WOSTEP and having working experience at Renaud & Papi (AP), Bart and Tim surely know what they are doing and take their watchmaking heritage (parents and grandparents) a few steps further. We noticed that the entire crew of watchmakers is very dedicated and gave passionate explanations to the questions we had about the One Hertz and watchmaking in general.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

After our guided tour through the workshop at Grönefeld we went to the Singraven property to take a few more pictures. Bart and Tim took some One Hertz timepieces with them as well, which is quite special as you will seldomly see this many Grönefeld watches together.

We received a guided tour in this 17th century mansion. This house, owned by many families but given to a foundation by its last owner in 1966, is packed with old paintings, antique furniture, large marble fire places and beautiful sculptures. In a dining room with an impressive table and very old china ware, we thought it might be a good idea to capture Bart and Tim in the style of the ‘Dutch Masters’.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

On the Singraven property there is also an old shed, which we used to take some pictures of the One Hertz timepieces. Bert, our watch photographer, brought his entire set-up and was clearly having fun shooting all these magnificent watches. We had the rose gold version, three titanium models and the last version in stainless steel (restricted to 12 pieces only) with us.

And below you’ll see all Grönefeld One Hertz watches all together, in rose gold, titanium and stainless steel. A truly unique image we think.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

While we were there anyway, we changed the photo set-up a bit and took some shots of Bart and Tim Grönefeld in the old barn.

Fratellowatches Visits Grönefeld In Their Natural Habitat

After our tour on the Singraven property we went to Country House Bloemenbeek De Lutte where we enjoyed a great diner with Bart and Tim, had a few drinks (a 3 digit number) and enjoyed the wonderful hotel rooms they’d reserved for us. We can recommend this place to anyone who wants to enjoy the country side of The Netherlands.

Bart, Tim and their entire team of watchmakers seem to be with both feet on the ground. Conciseness. Real. Honest. Friendly. Characteristics that we like and really appreciate. They want to deliver the best they can and are (therefore) really transparent about their business and what they do. The TimeZone award went to Grönefeld for a reason.

Go to our Facebook page (and LIKE us, we have way too little of those) and enjoy more pictures of our visit to Grönefeld.

A big thanks to Bart, Tim, their team, Daan van Mierlo (Singraven), Raymond Strikker (Bloemenbeek) and EyeWatch. Also make sure to visit the official Grönefeld website.
