Roger Dubuis let us know it is the(ir) year of the Astral Skeleton and comes with a range of new pieces. One of the Roger Dubuis watches we saw here at the SIHH in Geneva that we love best is their Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon.

The impressive case of the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider is only 45mm, but definitely looks (and wears) bigger on the wrist. This watch is not for the faint hearted. However, the most important feature of this watch is of course that it has been skeletonized which allows you to see all of the in-house manufactured hand-wound caliber RD505SQ movement.

But let’s get back to the case of this Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon first. The 45mm case is made of titanium with black DLC treatment. It is 13.75mm thick which makes it actually quite a modest watch with respect to the diameter. The watch comes on a comfortable black rubber strap with a titanium folding clasp.

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying TourbillonAs for the dial – well, there basically is no dial except for a flange – it is skeletonized and shows a black ring having minute and hour markers. The hands are made of gold and received a black DLC treatment.

You can see that Roger Dubuis kept the design very clean, compared to some of their other watches that seem to be a bit more ‘busy’. This watch is actually very easy on the eyes.

The movement as we already briefly mentioned, is a hand-wound flying tourbillon movement. The tourbillon cage rotates once every minute and is located at 7.30 on the dial. Roger Dubuis needed no more than 179 parts for this timepiece. The skeleton work on the Roger Dubuis caliber RD505SQ movement is beautifully done, uses a rhodium-plated circular grained main plate and has been finished with a wonderful Co?tes de Gene?ve. As you can see on the photo above, the cage of the tourbillon has the shape of a Celtic cross.
