Every month in 2023, we introduced a special Fratello X REM strap for the Omega Speedmaster. Our eighth strap this year, made for the month of August, pays tribute to the Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman” watch we introduced to you in 2018. It’s also appropriate as a September release, as later this month, part of the Fratello team will head over to Tokyo for this year’s first #SpeedyTuesday event.

Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman”

The Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman,” or ST2, was introduced on July 10th, 2018, and was spoken for within two hours. The responses were massive and very positive by collectors of both vintage and modern watches. Some people were lucky enough to order the ST2 with the same unique number as their first Speedy Tuesday, and others sadly missed out at all.

Special features

The Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman” is a tribute to that 1967 watch, especially to the Ultraman series’ main character. The first Speedy Tuesday edition was inspired by the original 1978 Project Alaska III watch that landed on our desk in 2012, with its stunning radial subdials. For this second Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday model, simply putting an orange hand on a Moonwatch would be too little effort. We left the original Speedmaster “Ultraman” alone. Instead, the Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman” has several playful features. It has a step dial made of aluminum. This was a first for Omega until the lightweight metal returned in 2019 for the dial of the Seamaster 300M No Time To Die version.

Other than the famous orange central seconds hand, you will find more orange accents on the dial. The small squares above the hour markers, the ‘Speedmaster’ wording, and the first three minute markers on the chronograph’s minute recorder. These three minutes also refer to Ultraman, as he could only stay in superhero mode for so long. Then, on the Dot-Over-Ninety bezel, the first Speedmaster in a long time to have one again. On the bezel, the Tachymètre wording is also in orange. The ST2 “Ultraman” came with both a NATO and leather strap. Both are black with orange accents. Last but not least, there’s the hidden Ultraman head on the 9 o’clock subdial when you use the UV torch included with the watch.

Fratello x REM strap for the Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman”

As it’s five years ago already, and you might have worn out your original strap, there’s now a Fratello x REM strap for the Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman.” I know I am almost saying this every month here in the Fratello office, but this is one of my favorites thus far. We just got it in, as summer isn’t the best time to coordinate these projects. One of the challenges for this month’s Fratello x REM strap collab was getting the color right. We requested the original Pantone color from Omega (and got it), so the strap perfectly matches the Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman.”

Color matching

For this August edition of the Fratello x REM Strap collab, we went for a Japanese text engraved on the long side of the strap and a III on the short side. Both are painted with precisely the same color as used on the Speedmaster. We asked Brandon, who lives in Japan, to help us create the correct text for the strap. It’s a special Speedy Tuesday message; you need the two parts to complete the text. The III, on the short end, will already give something away! Also, look at the buckle, which differs from the one we usually supply with our straps. In this case, it has “Fratello” written in Japanese.

Details on the Fratello x REM strap

The Swedish REM strap maker sources everything locally, including organic leather. The entire production of its products takes place in its atelier in Sweden. On the inside of the strap, you will find “August 2023” to mark this month’s edition, as well as the Fratello × REM collaboration embossing. The long end of the strap is 127mm, and the short part is 74mm.
