In 2019, Omega introduced the hand-wound caliber 3861 in both Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary editions. Then, in 2020, the brand used it as the movement for the Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award edition with an automaton on the case back. One year later, Omega introduced an update of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, featuring a new case, dial, hands, bracelet, and movement. Caliber 3861 became the successor of the Lemania-based caliber 1861, this time with a Master Chronometer certification by METAS.

The first caliber 3861 was introduced in the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary in Moonshine Gold

The new 3861 movement uses antimagnetic alloys, providing resistance to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. Of course, it also has Omega’s Co-Axial escapement, which ensures less friction. However, the 3861 is still based on the 1861 platform, keeping its 3Hz (21,600vph) operating frequency but using approximately 50% new components. Instead of 18 jewels, it now has 26. Notably, though, these additional ones are not visible when the movements are side by side.

With the Master Chronometer certification, the accuracy improved tremendously compared to the 1861 movement. It now should perform between 0 and +5 seconds per day on average rather than the -1/+10 average daily range that Omega guaranteed for its predecessor. Lastly, Omega’s caliber 3861 has a hacking function, a feature that many watch enthusiasts appreciate.

Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch 3861

Omega’s current Moonwatch models in stainless steel come in two flavors, with either the traditional Hesalite (Plexiglass) crystal on the front and an all-steel case back or with sapphire crystals on both the front and the display case back. From what we have heard, the “sapphire sandwich” version is the hot seller, whereas the Moonwatch with the Hesalite crystal prevailed in the past. You can’t go wrong with either version, of course, and as you know, it’s also quite the strap monster. If you want a change of pace from the stainless steel bracelet, you can easily switch to a NATO, Velcro, rubber, or leather strap as long as it’s 20mm wide.

REM × Fratello Speedmaster Caliber 3861 strap

For this month, we decided that our REM × Fratello Speedmaster strap should be a tribute to the current caliber 3861. We managed to get a technical drawing of it, and REM had it laser engraved on the leather strap. We went with a nice cognac color that will make the black dial of the Speedmaster “pop.” One part of Omega’s caliber 3861 is engraved on the long end of the strap, with the other part on the short end. You can even put them side by side to connect them.

To match the dial and bezel color, we decided to go with black stitching for the strap. Every strap comes with a Fratello-signed buckle. As always, the inside of the strap shows the month and year of the REM × Fratello Speedmaster strap’s production. The strap has a 127mm long end and a 74mm short end.
