Fratello Talks: Why We Chose Analog Watches In A Digital World
Why do we choose analog watches in a digital world? It’s a valid question, as these mechanical timekeepers (though still functional) are no longer the necessity they once were. Why, then, do they remain not just an obsession for the few but also relevant and ever-present objects in people’s private lives and even pop culture? That’s the subject we’re grappling with in today’s episode of Fratello Talks. Nacho, RJ, and Lex are in the studio, and they go through many of the reasons why, to them, watches are still relevant today. These range from distancing you from the digital overload of modern life to serving as long-lasting vessels for emotional significance and acting as accessories for expressing one’s individual taste. But, as always, before we get into it, let’s check those wrists!
Wrist check
Fore! RJ is swinging for the green with his Omega Constellation “Ernie Els” US Open Golf Champion Special Edition (ref. 1506.20.00) from 2001. This quirky watch, with its golfball-patterned dial, doesn’t just tell the time (and date) but also commemorates Omega ambassador Els’s US Open victory and marks any wearer as a fan of the sport.
Lex is fresh off the plane from Geneva and rocking his latest horological acquisition, a Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysique Universal Time True Seconds. This model from 2015 has since been discontinued, but it’s no less impressive today.
It’s business as usual on Nacho’s wrist, with his Omega Seamaster Professional 300M (ref. 2254.50.00) making an expected comeback. He has paired it with a ridged modern Bond-style striped NATO strap from CNS Watch Bands.
Fratello Talks: Why We Chose Analog Watches In A Digital World
Just how relevant are analog and mechanical watches today? We wouldn’t blame the average tech-savvy consumer for thinking the answer is a simple “not very.” And though smartphones and other devices have most of the functional aspects covered, most of you reading this will understand that watches’ relevance remains. The multibillion-dollar industry we navigate every day proves the point, and events like Watches and Wonders further cement it. But it’s not all about the macro level.
Additionally, watches remain deeply meaningful personal items that not only bring like-minded individuals together but can also be handed down as functional, serviceable objects for generations. Regardless, this is the topic of conversation today, so be sure to tune in, and feel free to join the discussion in the comments below. As always, we’ll see you back here next week for an all-new episode of Fratello Talks!
