Can you dig it? Just open your mind, your third eye, and your chakra’s and let your freak flag fly with the Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000TR-9ER. This groovy model uses specially developed Tran Tixxii titanium finished in an array of colors. It’s heavy, groovy, and mellow at the same time. Just feel the vibe, go with the flow, and take a trip to see how this new “square” is anything but square. Right on!

We already covered the G-Shock GMW-B5000TR-9ER when it was released to the press and then we went technical about an all-new titanium alloy called “Tran Tixxii”. It’s an alloy that Casio and Nippon Steel Corporation took six years to develop. Tran Tixxii has all the characteristics of titanium — so it’s light and anti-allergic — but it’s also twice as hard as regular titanium.

… the first titanium G-Shock with an all-mirror finish.

And because of its hardness, Casio can create a mirror finish comparable to that of stainless steel. As a result, the GMW-B5000TR-9ER is the first titanium G-Shock with an all-mirror finish. Impressive and all, but what happens when you see that multi-colored square in the metal?

Let your freak flag fly with the Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000TR-9ER

Well, the first live impression of the G-Shock GMW-B5000TR-9ER is that it’s outtasight! You may think this watch was designed by a spaced-out post-hippie, but so what? It looks the part if you ask me. Because of its iconic square shape and relatively modest size (49.3 × 43.2 × 13mm and a weight of 104g), it’s also way easier to wear than the radical XXL “Blue Phoenix”.

The “Rainbow Hippie” is a love/hate kind of jam.

The comments on the initial article about the GMW-B5000TR-9ER (we really need to come up with a good nickname fast because this reference number doesn’t say anything about its design, so let’s call it the “Rainbow Hippie” for now) were quite polarized. The “Rainbow Hippie” is a love/hate kind of jam. And that’s cool, man. The five colors are hypnotizing, transportative, one might say…

Everything is primo

Five colors sounds like a lot of colors. But in real life, they’re not that mind-blowing. The ion-plated “Rainbow Hippie” comes in pink gold, red, blue, light gray, and dark gray color scheme. It sure is a worthy addition to the Square Premium Series. And it won’t come as a surprise that the price of €1,590 is also premium. But that also goes for the build quality of the case and bracelet with threefold clasp and the level of finishing — everything is premium, or primo to stay in the sixties’ lingo.

Super Illuminator is not a band

The “Rainbow Hippie” might be an intense, vivid, mind-bending, consciousness-expanding, and mesmerizing watch, it’s more than just a psychedelic creation. Because it’s also a high-tech watch with a wide variety of functions. The colors may hypnotize you, the link with the smartphone takes care of very accurate timekeeping.

Setting up the watch with the G-Shock Connected app is a very mellow experience.

And it also gives you access to a lot of functions. Setting up the watch with the G-Shock Connected app is a very mellow experience. The same goes for the snooze function of the alarm — it slowly brings you back down. “Super Illuminator” may sound like a band you’ve seen once on Woodstock, it’s actually the LED backlight that lights up the dial and helps you find something in the dark. The negative display is more difficult to read than a positive display, but the dark dial works well in the colorful setting.

Make sure to wear…

The “Rainbow Hippie” is equipped with Tough Solar, so it’s kind to Mother Earth because of its lack of polluting battery. And if you’re going to San Francisco — “Frisco” is in the Pacific Time Zone, by the way — make sure to wear some flowers in your hair AND the GMW-B5000TR-9ER to match. This digital marvel will not just tell you the exact time there, it will tell you the exact time in no less than 39 different time zones. To cut a long story/summary short, the GMW-B5000TR-9 makes use of G-Shock’s flagship module. So the same “heart” as the very geometric, eighties-like “Tron”, but with a completely opposite “soul”.

Finding your jam

Guitar guru Carlos Santana said of the sixties that “The music was like Dalí, with many colors and revolutionary ways.” The G-Shock GMW-B5000TR-9ER “Rainbow Hippie” would fit right in and jam along with Carlos, but also with Jimi and Janis.

If €1,590 is a bit too much dough for you but still want to go psychedelic watch-wise, you could always opt for the €109 DW-5610DN-9ER in orange, yellow, purple, red, and green. There’s always a G-Shock that will let you fly your freak flag. Peace, brothers, and sisters.

PS, as you can see in the pictures, the “Rainbow Hippie” is not a bum. He can function in the office with great ease, and he can hold a job. He’s a responsible companion during the week, and also a fun-loving free spirit once it’s time to enjoy the weekend.
