Fratello Talks: Endgame Watches
Is there such a thing as an endgame watch? It’s not something we often consider. But just about two weeks ago, Henry wrote an article about his new Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600, referring to it as the ultimate diver and his “endgame” watch. This got us thinking about what this would be for us, so today on Fratello Talks, Nacho, Daan, and Thomas talk about their endgame watches. As you can imagine, it’s not as straightforward as it may seem. However, Thomas and Daan do seem to be pretty set on theirs. Still, there’s always room for wishful thinking, wild picks, and, of course, establishing the difference between a “grail” and an “endgame” watch. Before we jump into it, let’s see what’s on the guys’ wrists.

We start with Daan, who is wearing his Cartier Santos Galbée XL. Talk about a contender for an endgame watch! In fact, between his Santos and Rolex Explorer 114270, Daan feels like he’s pretty satisfied with his collection already. But has he already reached the endgame?
Thomas is wearing his gray-dial VPC Type 37HW, which has finally returned to his wrist after fulfilling its wedding duties. Now, one way to get your endgame watch is to save up and buy it, but another is to make it from scratch. Thomas feels he has achieved this with the creation of his ideal GADA watch. That said, there are a couple of other options he wouldn’t turn down.
Nacho, on the other hand, is less sure that there’s such a thing as a true endgame watch. To prove the point, he has opted to wear his latest “fun” purchase, an ’80s–’90s Poseidon watch with a black PVD-coated Monin-style case and gold-tone accents. It’s the kind of charming and relatively inexpensive watch he doesn’t see himself giving up, regardless of whether he were to own one of his endgame options.

The other question we consider in today’s episode of Fratello Talks is: what’s the difference between a grail and an endgame watch? To us, the main factor is that a grail may remain an unattainable object of admiration. An endgame watch, however, could be realistically purchased, worn, and enjoyed, providing a perfect dose of satisfaction that would make all other watches seem irrelevant. It’s the one that has the potential to end the hunt once and for all.
Some examples for the guys include Nacho’s beloved Rolex Explorer 16570, Thomas’s A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph, and Daan’s Parmigiani Fleurier 36mm Tonda PF in stone blue. But if you want to hear more on the subject and on more potential candidates, you’ll have to tune in. Remember to leave your thoughts on the concept of the endgame watch in the comments below. Let us know what your pick would be, and remember to tune in next week for a brand-new episode of Fratello Talks.
