It’s hard to believe that MB&F has been in business for 20 years. Yet, here we are with the marque that was part of a new wave of independents changing the look of Haute Horlogerie. Futuristic and funky designs are a hallmark of MB&F. Today’s latest pair of Legacy Machine 101 (LM101) Evo watches continues this vibe.

It was probably over a decade ago at a Salon QP event in London where I first tried on an MB&F creation. The piece single-handedly redefined how I looked at wristwatches. Here was a wildly styled object on my wrist with myriad exposed components and an altogether unorthodox display. I wasn’t sure at first. Since then, though, when asked about which highly progressive designs I enjoy most, an MB&F almost always jumps to the top of the list. While I enjoy the brand’s more oddly shaped pieces, like the Bulldog, today’s LM101 Evo models are what I think of when someone mentions MB&F.

The new Legacy Machine 101 Evo

MB&F first released the Legacy Machine 101 in 2020. The watch featured the brand’s distinctive bridge and suspended balance wheel just below its highly domed sapphire crystal. With a 40mm case, it was also one of the smallest pieces in the range. So, are the latest releases simply a color variant? No, the LM101 Evo is, as the name suggests, an evolution of the original, bringing a highly practical update.

The LM101 Evo retains its 40mm diameter and 49mm lug-to-lug. With a 16.5mm thickness, the watch has a bold stance, but that’s also expected with an MB&F and its bubble-like crystal. The updates come in the form of an 80m water resistance rating, a screw-down crown, a FlexRing shock absorber, and an integrated rubber strap with a folding clasp. While a Legacy Machine may not look like a daily watch, this one is meant to be worn. On top of this, the case is durable, lightweight titanium.

Two variants

The Legacy Machine 101 Evo is available in two distinct colorways. Each has a mainplate treated with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in either salmon or green. Twin black sub-dials are adorned with Super-LumiNova-filled hands. One shows the hours and minutes, while the other displays the remaining power reserve. Regarding the straps, the salmon variant comes with a gray rubber one, while the green model has the same strap but in white.

MB&F Legacy Machine LM101 Evo movement

An impressive movement decorated by Voutilainen

The “F” in MB&F stands for “friends,” and in this case, Kari Voutilainen is involved. The LM101 Evo boasts an in-house-developed movement with Voutilainen in charge of the finishing. This results in a traditional-looking caliber visible via the case back’s sapphire display. It features numerous NAC black bridges with Geneva stripes, anglage, and various other techniques. In addition to the 60-hour power reserve, the 23-jewel movement has a frequency of 18,000vph. It is comprised of 233 components.

Legacy Machine 101 Evo pricing and availability

MB&F is quick to point out that the LM101 Evo is not a limited edition and will join the regular collection. Then again, the brand is a small producer, so don’t expect these to flood the market. At CHF 62,000 (not including VAT), the latest release from one of my favorite watch brands is a rare treat for those who have deep pockets. Then again, after 20 years in business, MB&F still makes special watches that look like little else. For more information on the new Evo, visit the official MB&F site.
