Celebrating Scott Carpenter’s Centenary With The Limited-Edition Breitling Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute In Platinum
May 1st, 2025, marked exactly 100 years since the late astronaut Scott Carpenter was born. During the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission in 1962, he orbited Earth three times. He did so while wearing a one-of-a-kind Breitling Navitimer that he ordered from Willy Breitling. He asked for a Navitimer with a wider bezel, a stretch bracelet, and a 24-hour dial. This became the Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute. Today, Breitling introduces the limited-edition Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute in platinum with a blue sunburst dial to celebrate Scott Carpenter’s centenary.
In 2022, 60 years after the Mercury-Atlas 7 flight, Breitling released a re-edition of the 1962 Navitimer Cosmonaute. That watch has a stainless steel case and a platinum bezel. The black dial and white inner bezel pay tribute to the original Cosmonaute, just like the hand-wound B02 movement inside. Last year, Breitling introduced a rose gold version of the Navitimer Cosmonaute. Both the case material and emerald-green dial were unexpected, but they weren’t as surprising as the automatic B12 movement inside. For today’s anniversary model in platinum, Breitling returns to the B02 hand-wound movement. Let’s take a closer look.
The limited-edition Breitling Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute in platinum
In terms of size, the new Breitling Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute in platinum is identical to the 60th-anniversary model. That means the case has a 41mm diameter, a 13mm thickness, and a 47.1mm lug-to-lug length. The flanks have a brushed finish, while the tops of the lugs feature a mirror polish.
The main dial is blue with a sunburst texture, and the sub-dials are white, just like the inner bidirectional slide-rule bezel. The printing on the blue part of the dial is white, while the printing on the white parts is blue. At 12, we find the winged logo of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), highlighting the Navitimer’s historic role as the official watch of the world’s largest pilots’ club since the watch’s development in 1952. In the hour totalizer at 6 o’clock, you’ll also find the date window with a white background. The large red central chronograph hand adds a sporty touch, as do the red details on the slide rule.
Hand-wound caliber B02
With the push-pull crown at 3 o’clock, you can operate Breitling’s B02 hand-wound column-wheel chronograph movement inside. It runs at a frequency of 28,800vph, features 39 jewels, and holds a power reserve of 70 hours. As it turns out, a self-winding movement isn’t that reliable in a zero-gravity environment. That’s why a hand-wound movement makes a lot more sense in a watch that pays tribute to the late astronaut Scott Carpenter.
The bridges feature engravings linked to the 1962 orbit mission, like the mission and the capsule’s name, as well as Carpenter’s last name. These engravings are the same as the ones on the 60th-anniversary Navitimer Cosmonaute model. However, the engravings on the case back are slightly different — “First Swiss wristwatch in space,” “One of 50,” and “Scott Carpenter Centenary 1925–2025.” It’s also good to know that the watch has a 3-bar (30m) water resistance rating.
Limited to 50 pieces
The new Breitling Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute in platinum is a limited edition of only 50 pieces. It costs €42,000 and comes on a blue alligator leather strap, which includes a white gold folding clasp.
