Introducing: The Piaget Polo 79 In A Tantalizing Two-Tone Configuration

Two years ago, Piaget reintroduced its iconic Polo watch. The Polo 79 in full 18K yellow gold was a very appropriate way to celebrate the maison’s 150th anniversary. For those who thought that version was a bit too flashy, last year, Piaget introduced another variant in all 18K white gold. Now, if that one went a bit too far on the modesty scale, the new two-tone version Piaget introduced today might be more for you. This new Polo 79 is made of brushed 18K white gold with polished 18K yellow gold gadroons between the pieces. This emphasizes the Piaget Polo 79’s characteristic construction even better than the previous two versions.

I remember when RJ came back from the presentation of the 18K yellow gold Piaget Polo 79 two years ago. As a lover of anything yellow gold these days, he was over the moon with what he had tried on the wrist during the event. Honestly, while I liked it, it was a bit too gaudy for me, so I was happy when Piaget toned it down with the 18K white gold version last year. However, the new two-tone execution might actually be the best so far. Let’s take a quick look.

The Piaget Polo 79 Two-Tone

As Yves Piaget used to say, the Piaget Polo is both a bracelet watch and a watch bracelet. Its most distinguishing feature is its modular construction, which appears to extend all the way through the dial. In that sense, the two-tone Polo 79 isn’t all that different from the previous two re-editions. It still has a 38mm case with a 7.45mm thickness, and the all-gold construction makes it weigh about 200 grams. The white gold parts have a horizontally brushed finish, which contrasts beautifully with the mirror polish on the slimmer gadroons in between. The hour and minute hands are yellow gold this time, which makes sense because they originate from a contrasting white gold section of the dial.

Inside is Piaget’s 1200P1 automatic movement. This super-slim caliber has a 2.35mm profile and features an off-center micro-rotor for winding. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, features 25 jewels, and has a power reserve of approximately 44 hours.  The sapphire crystal in the case back lets you see its ultra-thin construction and beautiful finishing.

The best version so far?

As I said, I liked the all-yellow-gold model, but it was a bit much. The all-white-gold one was more up my alley, but I’ll admit that something was missing. This new two-tone execution is the perfect in-between option for me. It’s not as flashy as the all-yellow-gold variant, but the contrasting gold elements make it more fun to look at than the all-white-gold model. In a way, it reminds me of the two-tone Cartier Santos, with its steel base and yellow gold bezel and screws.

The brushed white gold elements make the Piaget Polo 79 look a bit sportier than the yellow gold version, while the polished yellow gold gadroons give it a more elegant look than a typical integrated-bracelet sports watch. When I take all three variants into account, I think this final two-tone one is my favorite.

The new Piaget Polo 79 in 18K white and yellow gold costs €96,000 (including 21% VAT). That’s a bit more expensive than the other two versions, probably because gold prices are rising.
