Introducing: The Tissot PRX UFO Robot Grendizer 50th Anniversary Special Edition
Last year, Tissot surprised us with a special-edition PRX featuring a lumed Grendizer on its blue dial. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the anime icon, so Tissot is back with yet another watch paying tribute to UFO Robot Grendizer. This time, the PRX received an all-black PVD treatment. Also, the layered black dial features a dynamic depiction of Grendizer, including a lume show in darker conditions.
Unfortunately, the Fratello team doesn’t have an anime fan on board. Last year, Lex introduced Grendizer, also known as Goldorak, to people who’d never heard of the character and tried to explain how he ended up on the dial of the Tissot PRX. Read his article if you’re looking for that same information. Like him, for this introduction, I’ll focus on the watch instead of deep-diving into the complicated world of Duke Fleed, King Vega, and the flying saucer Spazer. Let’s see how that goes.
The Tissot PRX UFO Grendizer 50th Anniversary Special Edition
For this new PRX UFO Grendizer 50th Anniversary Special Edition, Tissot once again used the 40mm PRX as a starting point. This time, however, the stainless steel integrated case and bracelet received a full-black PVD coating. This makes the watch look very stealthy, especially because the dial is also black.
The layered dial features a dynamic carved-out picture of Grendizer. It looks like he could break through the sapphire crystal at any moment and look you straight in the eye. Only Grendizer’s yellow eyes and the 18K yellow gold Double Harker seconds hand stand out against the all-black background. On the rehaut, you can read “UFOロボ グレンダイザー” (Yūfō Robo Gurendaizā), the original Japanese title of the anime series.
In the dark, Grendizer’s fist, parts of his head, the hour markers, and the hour and minute hands light up green thanks to a layer of Super-LumiNova.
Only 1,975 pieces
Unlike last year’s Grendizer PRX, this year’s is a limited edition. There are only 1,975 pieces, as indicated by the “1 of 1975” engraving on the case back. Apart from that, the case back also indicates that the watch is water resistant to 100 meters and provides a good look at the Powermatic 80 automatic movement inside. The caliber features a custom-engraved rotor with an image of Grendizer.
Available today
As mentioned, I’m not into Grendizer, and blacked-out watches are also not my thing. But if you’re a fan of the anime series and can appreciate what Tissot has done with its PRX, then I can fully understand if you find this release exciting. The Tissot PRX UFO Grendizer 50th Anniversary Special Edition is only available through selected boutiques and on Tissot’s website in certain countries. It costs €1,095 and comes in a Spazer UFO-inspired capsule.
