When Jaeger-LeCoultre applies the Hybris Artistica and Grande Tradition labels, expectations rise. These watches are complicated, sure, but they are also theatrical displays of mechanical skill and decorative artistry. Today, the brand introduces two new creations under these banners, the Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 and the Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948. Each interprets the theme differently, one through the heavens, the other through our planet.

Both watches push the boundaries of traditional complications. One offers a poetic reading of sidereal time under a domed enamel night sky. The other turns the globe itself into a horological stage. Join me for a closer look!

The new releases in context

The Hybris Artistica collection typically blends high complications and fine decorative crafts. It is where Jaeger-LeCoultre showcases not only its technical ingenuity but also its mastery of métiers d’art, such as enamel, engraving, and sculptural dial work. Since its introduction in 2014, the label has been reserved for watches that push functional watchmaking into artistic statements.

The Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 exemplifies this philosophy. Its theme is the night sky, displaying sidereal time and a view of the stars in the Northern Hemisphere. The other new model, the Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948, may not be part of the Hybris Artistica line, but it shares a similar spirit through its dramatic three-dimensional world-time display and complicated dial execution.

Together, these two watches form a kind of horological partnership. One looks to the stars, while the other looks to Earth. The Grande Tradition is limited to 20 pieces and costs €302,000. The Hybris Artistica is even more limited, at five pieces, each priced at €670,000.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945

The Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 is themed after the night sky. A domed Grand Feu enamel disc displays the constellations as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. It sits atop an intricate “Atomium” lattice of 117 tiny spheres, representing celestial bodies.

The layered dial creates great visual depth. Despite this complexity, legibility remains clear thanks to refined dauphine hands and clean hour markers on the outer ring.

The entire central portion of the dial, including the tourbillon, spins counterclockwise. A white circle then reveals the night sky as visible over the Vallée de Joux. As if this isn’t impressive enough, JLC throws in a minute repeater to top it all off.

Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 specifications

The Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 is a manually wound minute repeater with a celestial display and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Cosmotourbillon. The case, crafted from 18K pink gold, has a 45mm diameter and a 16.05mm thickness. Water resistance is rated at 50 meters, which is generous for such a complicated watch. I guess taking this swimming is probably the height of decadence.

Inside beats the brand’s in-house caliber 945, featuring hours, minutes, a zodiacal calendar with the date and month, a rotating star chart, and a tourbillon that completes one rotation every sidereal day (23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds). This precision mirrors the actual rotation of the Earth relative to the stars rather than the Sun. A cathedral-gong minute repeater, enhanced by patented trébuchet hammers, adds an acoustic dimension to the already overwhelming experience. Jaeger-LeCoultre rates the watch’s power reserve at approximately 40 hours.

This model comes on a blue alligator strap with small-scale alligator lining and a pink gold adjustable folding clasp. With just five pieces produced, you are highly unlikely to ever run into someone wearing the same watch. That’s a comforting idea when you have spent almost €700k.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948

The Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948 takes our home planet rather than the night sky as its theme. Its domed dial depicts the Northern Hemisphere using champlevé enamel for continents and translucent lacquer over guilloché for the oceans. A skeletonized framework outlines the latitudes and longitudes, while the guilloché base shimmers beneath. No fewer than nine layers of enamel form the continents, while 17 layers of lacquer give depth to the oceans.

As the mechanism drives the map in a 24-hour rotation, the continents and oceans slowly turn along with the city ring, representing a real-time view of the world in motion. The flying tourbillon orbits the dial once per day, becoming part of the global display rather than remaining in a fixed position. What sets this interpretation of a worldtimer apart from others is that the domed and layered dial structures literally add another dimension.

Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948 specifications

Logically, this Master Grande Tradition model houses Jaeger-LeCoultre’s caliber 948, composed of 388 parts and 42 jewels, ticking at 28,800 beats per hour with a 48-hour power reserve. The 43mm by 14.13mm case is finely finished with a mix of polishing, satin brushing, and microblasting. As with the Hybris Artistica, this model is ready to take swimming, but please don’t.

Caliber 948 combines a worldtimer function with a tourbillon. The mechanism rotates the entire world map, city ring, and tourbillon once every 24 hours. You can operate the worldtimer function via the single crown, allowing time to be adjusted in one-hour increments. The movement doesn’t stop while you do so.

The Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948 is produced in a limited edition of 20 pieces. It will take a cold €302,000 to make one yours.

Initial impressions of the new Hybris Artistica and Grande Tradition models

Jaeger-LeCoultre often gets flak for being overly dependent on the Reverso. While this may be true in terms of sales and general attention, I think the house shines in this elevated segment. The Duomètre, Hybris, and Grande Tradition lines represent high horology in a way that is unique to JLC. From the types of complications to the aesthetics of how they are executed, there is no mistaking the watches for anything but Jaeger-LeCoultre creations.

These two new models are no exceptions. The Hybris Artistica particularly sings to me. I absolutely love the fine atomic structure elevating the dial. I cannot wait to see these new models in real life and experience the dimensionality beyond mere photographs.
