Introducing: The Daniel Roth Extra Plat Rose Gold Skeleton Ref. DBBD02A1
Daniel Roth introduces its latest offering during the LVMH Watch Week in Milan! It’s the Extra Plat Rose Gold Skeleton. Though based on the previously introduced Extra Plat watches with caliber DR002, this one has a special skeletonized movement (DR002SR).
Honoring Daniel Roth’s heritage
It’s no secret that I admire the new Daniel Roth watches introduced under Louis Vuitton’s La Fabrique du Temps. Master watchmakers Barbasini and Navas do an excellent job of honoring Daniel Roth’s heritage and maintaining a very high standard in finishing and decoration. They are also responsible for many notable watches from other brands where they previously worked, as mentioned in earlier coverage of Daniel Roth watches.
Skeleton watches
The Extra Plat watches are the first step in the revival of the Daniel Roth brand, according to Louis Vuitton. Roth began creating skeleton versions of his watches in the early 1990s. He produced these tiny quantities, as the process required a lot of his and his craftsmen’s capacity.
Daniel Roth Extra Plat Rose Gold Skeleton
As you can see, the movement inside this new Daniel Roth Extra Plat Rose Gold Skeleton is certainly one worth admiring. The caliber DR002SR, demonstrated so beautifully here, features newly shaped bridges and plates designed to enable this open-worked construction. What’s more, the movement is made of 18K rose gold to match the double-ellipse case. Furthermore, the traditional finishing, like internal angling, is beautifully executed, as you can see in the images.
“The work required to finish a skeletonized caliber of this nature demands complete mastery of traditional techniques,” note Barbasini and Navas. “At La Fabrique du Temps, we can perform all of these operations under one roof, ensuring that every component reflects the standards of Daniel Roth. This internal capability is essential to the integrity of the final watch.”
Six references in the Daniel Roth collection
The Daniel Roth Extra Plat Rose Gold Skeleton ref. DBBD02A1 is an impressive addition to the brand’s portfolio, and I’ve already heard from some collectors that they greatly appreciate it. Daniel Roth’s current collection now consists of six references, including the two Souscription watches. All six references rely on the double-ellipse case that Roth introduced in 1988. Three tourbillon models in an equal number of precious metals (yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum) use the DR001 movement.
The Extra Plat models, including the new skeletonized version, use the DR002(SR). The SR iteration of the DR002 offers the same specifications as the regular version, including a 65- hour power reserve and a 4Hz (28,800vph) frequency. The DR002SR has a mere 3.1mm profile and consists of 141 components, 21 of which are jewels.
Initial impressions
This Extra Plat Rose Gold Skeleton has a very modest 35.5mm diameter, 38.6mm length, and 6.9mm thickness, making it a joy to wear on most wrist sizes. The rose gold ensemble of the DR002SR movement and the case looks stunning, and the blued hour and minute hands provide enough contrast to make it usable, which is not always the case with skeletonized watches.
The skeletonized Daniel Roth Extra Plat is a logical step in building up the catalog of watches. Usually, I am not the biggest fan of skeletonization, especially in modern watches, which often look too industrial. But recently, we’ve seen some more classic, or dress-style, skeletonized watches that have looked fantastic. I will gladly add this new Daniel Roth to that list.
