Introducing: The Studio Underd0g × Fears 02Series Mim0sa
There are few self-inflicted experiences in life worse than a hangover. What often starts as a fun night out turns into a rough next morning. The “hair of the dog” is a well-known “cure” with drinks such as the Bloody Mary and Mimosa serving as popular tonics. It’s the latter beverage that inspires today’s Studio Underd0g × Fears collaboration. The 02Series Mim0sa is the third and final cocktail-inspired piece in a trilogy of watches created from the partnership of two UK-based brands.
This March, at the British Watchmakers’ Day in London, Fears and Studio Underd0g debuted the first of the cocktail watches. The Gimlet made its way to the show, the only place to buy them, and the 200-piece run sold out quickly. The second piece, the Manhattan, was sold as an exclusive run of 300 watches at this past weekend’s Windup New York watch fair. Now, for the final act, the duo is releasing the 02Series Mim0sa. This time, you’ll be able to order the watches online instead of traveling to a watch event.
The Studio Underd0g × Fears 02Series Mim0sa
The final cocktail-infused model follows a similar format to the Gimlet and Manhattan. However, as we’ll see, the dial is slightly different in texture. The stainless steel case retains its great 38mm diameter and 43.5mm lug-to-lug. It features a domed sapphire crystal, resulting in a 12mm overall thickness. Practically, the watch has a 100m water resistance rating. The team kept the UK-made theme with a gray Alcantara strap and pin buckle from The Strap Tailor.
An effervescent dial
The Mim0sa dial construction that could easily be confused for something from Ming. From the top, the design starts with a 1mm-thick sapphire dial. On the underside, the surface is CNC-machined and then semi-polished. Each process results in a 50% yield, which means that production takes time.
Furthermore, the underlying dial’s surface has seven coats of hand-applied Super-LumiNova. In lit environments, it shows off a gradient effect due to pigment. In the dark, the entire thing glows brightly. A calling card of all dials in the series is a set of two flathead screws to hold both layers together. Skeletonized syringe hands and classic black Arabic numerals make this a legible watch.
A manual-winding movement
The stainless steel case back shows off orange wedges in its center. Underneath, the watch uses the manual-winding Sellita SW210-1. A large onion crown handles operational duties. In terms of performance, the 19-jewel movement has 42 hours of power reserve and a frequency of 28,800vph. It is accurate within ±7 seconds per day.
The Mim0sa is a different kind of limited edition
The last watch within the trilogy of boozy-beverage-inspired pieces is a limited edition, but there’s no prescribed maximum number available. In fact, the Studio Underd0g × Fears 02 Series Mim0sa will only be limited by the number of orders received within a certain window. Specifically, the watch will be available to order on October 23rd between 15:00 and 00:00 BST on Studio Underd0g’s official site. Some good news is that pricing hasn’t changed for all three watches.
