Glashütte Original was founded in 1845, and to commemorate this milestone, the brand has unveiled a stunning new PanoLunarTourbillon. As we’ll see, the watch showcases the best of the manufacture, featuring an in-house movement and dial. With a limited production run and flagship status, this watch won’t be for everyone, but it’s a great example of its maker’s talents.

Glashütte Original debuted the PanoLunarTourbillon in 2013. Since then, the watch has undergone small tweaks to its movement, including the introduction of a silicon balance spring and an increased power reserve. Also, the thickness has dropped slightly. Above all, though, the signature layout, with its off-center dial, tourbillon, and moonphase and date displays, has remained. For 2025, the form receives yet another update. The result is a gorgeous piece celebrating 180 years of watchmaking in Glashütte.

The Glashütte Original PanoLunarTourbillon

Glashütte Original’s latest creation is a 40mm by 47mm powerhouse. Considering that it has an automatic flying tourbillon movement and sapphire crystals on both case sides, a 12.7mm thickness is quite reasonable. The case itself is made of platinum. It contains sharply defined chamfers with a mix of polished and brushed surfaces. A large signed crown handles setting and winding duties. These components come together for a 50m water resistance rating. Finally, the watch is available with either a dark blue Louisiana alligator or blue fabric strap. Each comes with a case-matching platinum folding clasp.

Here for the dial

While some may see the new PanoLunarTourbillon as yet another color variant, this watch represents far more. In June, Glashütte Original opened its new dial manufactory, the only such site of its kind in the region. Naturally, today’s model is equipped with a dial made in this facility. The color, which we see as salmon, is inspired by the iron-rich soil in Glashütte. Artisans create this color using a galvanic treatment. At different angles, flecks of red are visible in the crystalline surface. Other operations, including milling, provide the concentric-grained features and moonphase inset. Notably, the moonphase wheel is also fabricated in the new factory. Blued gold hands and indexes match a white-on-blue panoramic date display. Take note of the small hand on the flying tourbillon, which rotates every 60 seconds.

The 93-03 automatic flying tourbillon

The in-house 93-03 caliber powers the PanoLunarTourbillon. This is an automatic movement with a flying tourbillon, a 60-hour power reserve, and a frequency of 21,600vph. The front of the movement is adorned with perlage, while the reverse side shows Glashütte striping. A small 21K oscillating rotor is countersunk within the top plate. Regarding the tourbillon, the delicate cage has a tin-polished finish.

Thoughts on the PanoLunarTourbillon

At times, I’m relatively ambivalent about highly complicated dress watches. They can be quite dry and even boring. Of course, some admire this relative level of discretion. The PanoLunarTourbillon, however, is an outlier. Its dial is stunning and reveals the importance of color and detailing. The various dial edges all look sharp and defined. These are intricacies that are often hidden in some hues.

A limited offering

Of course, the PanoLunarTourbillon is a special release. Just 50 of these watches are available at global Glashütte Original boutiques. With a price of €127,200, this is clearly not for everyone. However, it’s an important watch for several reasons. First, it celebrates the 180th anniversary of the brand. Second, this watch allows us to see the fruition of Glashütte Original’s new in-house dial facility. Frankly, it’s nice to see this type of investment in production. Overall, it’s the type of halo piece that should draw potential customers in to look at the rest of the company’s lineup, and that’s a sound idea.
