Sternglas Introduces The Hamburg Pro Automatik In Two Variants
We are no strangers to the Sternglas Hamburg collection. The brand’s popular model, named after its hometown, is available in various versions powered by quartz or mechanical calibers. Additionally, the Sternglas Hamburg is available as a time-and-date model or a chronograph. The German brand now introduces two top-of-the-line models that feature slimmer cases, an upgraded movement, and updated looks. It’s time to check out the new Sternglas Hamburg Pro Automatik.
Not too long ago, Sternglas released the beautiful Hamburg Automatik Edition Marine. Mike reviewed the watch and touched upon the great value of the Hamburg Automatik collection. As he stated, these watches are great for daily wear and can provide a start for new collectors. With the new Hamburg Pro Automatik models, Sternglas has made them even more attractive for people looking for a stylish Bauhaus-inspired daily wearer.
The story of the Sternglas Hamburg Pro Automatik
The Hamburg series has been the cornerstone of the Sternglas catalog for the last five years. To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the brand’s team decided to update and upgrade the Hamburg Automatik to create the improved Pro version. This new model comes in two variations. The first is the Alabaster version, a staple colorway for all the Sternglas models, featuring a stainless steel case and an alabaster-colored (beige) dial. The second model is the Dark Green one, which combines a stainless steel case, a bronze PVD coating, and a moss-green dial.
We had both in for review to find out more. Let’s start with the basics. Both models feature a 42mm case with a 9mm profile (without the crystal), a 47mm length, and a 20mm lug spacing.
The case is significantly thinner than that of the 12mm-thick regular Hamburg Automatik, and the lug-to-lug offers a 2mm reduction as well. The brand also added some nice intricacies to the case with a mix of brushed and polished finishes. What remains, though, is the characteristic minimalist Bauhaus style.
The minimalist dial design of the Hamburg Pro Automatik
The dial design has stayed the same, following a minimalist approach. It features an inner hour track and an outer minute track. The designers connected the two by creating a long marker that serves both as an hour marker and a five-minute marker.
Additionally, the markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock feature a luminous dot that corresponds with the lume used for the pencil-style hands. Lastly, there is a date window at 6 o’clock. The date disc matches the color of the dial and features black printing, ensuring it integrates nicely. The placement is rather high, but I don’t mind that. There is plenty of space for it, and it creates a nice extra design element on a minimal dial design.
When it comes to the two different versions, the Alabaster model features black printing on the beige dial and mint-green lume. The Dark Green model comes with white printing on the moss-green dial and orange lume.
This version also features an orange seconds hand for an extra pop of color. The combination of the bronze color with green and orange works well for the Hamburg Pro Automatik, although I must say that the classic Alabaster version is my favorite for its minimalist design.
Inside the cases of both models, you will find the Miyota 9015. This automatic caliber operates at 28,800vph, has 24 jewels, and offers 42 hours of power reserve. Its accuracy ranges between -10 and +30 seconds per day.
Since this upgraded caliber is part of Miyota’s premium line of slim movements, Sternglas was able to seriously reduce the case thickness. As a result, the wearability also improves substantially. For the first time, Sternglas has chosen a case back with a sapphire display that shows the caliber and its black PVD rotor with gold Sternglas engraving.
Strap and bracelet options for the Hamburg Pro Automatik
The Alabaster model comes with a black or dark brown vintage leather strap with classic stitching in the same color. Additionally, you can opt for a stainless steel Milanese bracelet or the brand’s SuperSlim bracelet in steel. For the Dark Green model, you can choose between the same leather straps, but the bracelets feature a bronze PVD coating to match the case. For this one model, I would always go for the leather straps as the bronze PVD bracelets are too much for my taste. When it comes to the Alabaster model, though, the choice is a bit harder. I like the black strap and the Milanese bracelet, so I would probably get both to mix things up nicely.
Wearing the Sternglas Hamburg Pro Automatik
On the wrist, these watches wear very nicely. The slimmer case makes it easy to wear them all day, and they smoothly slide under your cuff when needed. The one thing that stood out with the reduced thickness was the case proportions. At 42mm across, these watches aren’t tiny. By reducing the thickness, both watches become rather large, thin watches. While that doesn’t negatively affect the wearing experience, it does give them a bit of a saucer-like appearance. This may not bother everyone, but it’s worth mentioning for those who are picky about such things.
All in all, wearing these two new Hamburg Pro Automatik models once again showed the great power of Bauhaus-inspired watches. If you are a fan of clean, minimalist design, these two watches are a great option. With the upgraded movement and the slimmer overall profile, Sternglas made sure to update them properly compared to the standard Hamburg Automatik models.
So it deserves a compliment that the brand went to great lengths to create a new version of the Hamburg Automatic to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Both watches are available now for a special introductory price of €669.
After this introduction period, the regular price will be €699. Considering the updates, the price increase over the €429 standard Hamburg Automatik is understandable. For those looking for a Bauhaus-inspired daily wearer that is a step up from the regular Sternglas models, this will be their new favorite.
If you are in the market for the new Sternglas Hamburg Pro Automatik, you can find the two versions on the brand’s official site.
