Another Friday, another list. For this week’s Top 5, we look at another Rolex classic. The Cosmograph Daytona is one of the brand’s most iconic pieces in the watch world. The stainless steel versions of the racing chronograph are notoriously difficult to source through a Rolex dealer, and pre-owned prices are generally higher than retail. That’s why we compiled a list of five chronographs that could be great alternatives to the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. Let’s find out what they are.

For any iconic Rolex model, there are plenty of alternatives. The same goes for the Daytona. But can these watches actually replace the brand’s iconic chronograph in your heart and collection? The answer to that question will always be personal. If you are seriously chasing a Daytona, you probably won’t be able to replace it with anything else. However, if you are drawn to a Rolex Daytona but are also considering other options, this list may be of interest. Let’s find out what our five picks are.

Rolex Daytona alternatives — Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 flat-lay on book

Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 “Ed White”

An easy first pick is the Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 “Ed White.” We have even put the Daytona up against this watch in one of the installments of our Sunday Morning Showdown series. So if you want to see a good ol’ brawl between these two heavyweights, I suggest that you read that article once you are done with this list. For now, let’s just talk about the Speedmaster a bit. As most of you will know, the Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 is a rendition of the Speedmaster 105.003, the watch that graced the wrist of NASA astronaut Ed White during the first spacewalk in 1965. However, when developing this modern version, Omega analyzed astronaut Gene Cernan’s 105.003.

The modern version is produced in a dedicated facility, with a single watchmaker responsible for its completion. Every watch, including the movement, is assembled twice and adjusted by this watchmaker. He or she will assemble it, adjust/regulate it, disassemble it, clean it, and assemble it once more. This offers a personal touch compared to the mass-produced Rolex Daytona. Additionally, the modern production facilities ensure a high-quality version of the third series of the classic Speedy. And that will become immediately apparent when you put it on your wrist. The detail and finishing are on a different level than the regular Moonwatch.

The level of detail on the Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 is stunning

The Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 has a 39.7mm stainless steel case with a 47.8mm lug-to-lug and a 13mm overall thickness, including the crystal. It’s the classic straight-lug case that many people love dearly, including yours truly. Omega equipped it with a steel bezel with a black ceramic insert and a black galvanized step dial with three registers. The dial’s detail and finishing are truly wonderful. A great example is the refined concentric graining on the sub-dials. Protecting the dial is a sapphire crystal featuring the Omega logo etched in the center.

But turning the watch around reveals the biggest draw of this model for many Speedmaster fans. There, you will see the wonderful Sedna Gold-plated Omega caliber 321. As most of you know, it is a modern remake of the classic 321 movement that powered the Speedmaster in the past. Omega went to great lengths to ensure the modern caliber not only honors the original technically but is also beautifully finished. Furthermore, Omega increased the 321’s power reserve from 44 to a modern 55 hours, which adds great everyday practicality. The Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 retails for €17,100 and is the perfect first pick for this list.

Rolex Daytona alternatives — meteorite-dial Zenith Chronomaster Sport

Zenith Chronomaster Sport

Another easy pick is the Zenith Chronomaster Sport. When the watch first debuted in 2021, watch enthusiasts quickly labeled it the “Zaytona” due to its striking resemblance to the Rolex icon. But that didn’t stop fans from buying it, and indeed, the Chronomaster Sport offers a great alternative to the Daytona. Plus, Zenith played a pivotal role in making the first-generation automatic Rolex Daytona happen, as most of you know. Zenith provided Rolex with its El Primero caliber 400, which Rolex watchmakers modified into the Rolex caliber 4030. This movement then powered the first-generation Daytona from 1988 to 2000.

But back to the Zenith Chronomaster Sport. While we also saw the resemblance to the Daytona, we have grown to love the Chronomaster Sport and seen it become more distinct. One of the standouts I adore is the Chronomaster Sport Titanium, which I had the pleasure of reviewing in 2024. While the initial visual similarity to the Daytona might have caused mixed reactions, the stainless steel models also have several typical Zenith design cues that distinguish them from the iconic Rolex chronograph. On top of that, the current Chronomaster Sport lineup shows great diversity.

The Chronomaster Sport has gradually become a crowd favorite

Zenith offers the Chronomaster Sport with not only ceramic bezels but also full-metal ones, which drastically change the look. Additionally, the materials range from stainless steel to titanium, ceramic, and gold. Lastly, Zenith offers remarkable dial variations, including the meteorite dial shown in the pictures. The Chronomaster Sport has a 40mm case with a 13.6mm thickness and a 47mm lug-to-lug. The inaugural models had either a white or black dial, both with the signature tricolor registers in blue, silver, and gray, and a black ceramic bezel.

Later, Zenith expanded the collection with a string of stainless steel versions, including the brilliant Boutique Edition, which uses the three signature register colors for the bezel, and two steel-bezel versions with pink and blue dials. Inside the case, you will find Zenith’s El Primero 3600 caliber. Having debuted in the Chronomaster Sport in 2021, this is the most modern standard version of the classic El Primero chronograph movement from 1969. It operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour, has 35 jewels, and offers a 60-hour power reserve. Finishing the watch is an Oyster-style bracelet that makes the Chronomaster Sport a dream to wear.

At €12,200 for the standard steel versions with ceramic bezels, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport is the perfect second pick for this list of Daytona alternatives.

Rolex Daytona alternatives — copper-dial Breitling Chronomat B01 42 on side, crown up

Breitling Chronomat B01 42

Our third pick is the brilliant Breitling Chronomat B01 42. The watch has been around since 2020 and still looks as cool as it did when it debuted. While the Chronomat is technically an aviation chronograph and not a racing chronograph, since it has a tachymeter scale, it offers the same practicality. On top of that, Breitling’s Chronomat is another legendary name in the world of chronographs. The B01 42 version stood out immediately upon its release six years ago. It presented an updated aesthetic without forgoing the signature elements of the 1980s Chronomat, such as the rotating timing bezel with rider tabs at every 15-minute interval and the Rouleaux bracelet.

These elements have played a big part in making the modern Chronomat a much-loved modern chronograph. The watch features a 42mm stainless steel case with a 15.1mm profile and a 50.5mm lug-to-lug. Those numbers might seem daunting, but from experience, we can say that the watch wears like a dream despite its substantial size. Inside the case, Breitling equips the watch with its in-house B01 chronograph caliber. The automatic caliber operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a generous 70-hour power reserve.

Picking the right version of the Breitling Chronomat

Breitling currently offers the standard stainless steel model with four dial colors. On top of that, there is the special Six Nations series, but you have to be a rugby fan to appreciate those. My favorite is the copper-dial version, which looks stunning. Other standard dial colors are green, silver, and blue, all with black sub-dials. Breitling also offers the Chronomat on a rubber strap that resembles the Rouleaux bracelet, but in our view, the actual bracelet is the only way to go. Currently, the Breitling Chronomat on the Rouleaux bracelet can be yours for €9,400.

Rolex Daytona alternatives — Tudor Black Bay Chrono "Flamingo Blue"

Tudor Black Bay Chrono

Whenever we think about Rolex alternatives, the name Tudor will automatically spring to mind. And with the Tudor Black Bay Chrono, Rolex’s sister brand offers a relatively affordable option that will appeal to many. But when it comes to the Tudor Black Bay Chrono, there are some differences compared to the Daytona. The first and most obvious is the two-register layout of the Black Bay Chrono versus the Daytona’s three-register design. Instead of a 30-minute totalizer at 3 o’clock, the Black Bay Chrono has a 45-minute counter, and it includes a date window at 6 o’clock, while the Daytona has none. Still, it’s hard to deny that the Black Bay Chrono’s overall vibe takes after the vintage manual-winding Daytonas.

The Black Bay Chrono is also a larger watch, with a 41mm diameter, 14.4mm thickness, and 50.1mm lug-to-lug. The two inaugural models of this generation feature either a black reverse-panda or a white panda dial. But Tudor has extended the regular collection over time with a blue Boutique Edition and two gold-and-steel models. As most of you will know, the brand also added pink– and turquoise-dial versions to its Daring Watches series, which became huge hits. Lastly, Tudor also created the lightweight Black Bay Chrono “Carbon 25” for the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls F1 team last year.

The Breitling-based caliber MT5813

Inside the case of the Black Bay Chrono, you will find the Tudor MT5813 caliber. The automatic chronograph caliber is a COSC-certified chronometer based on the Breitling 01 caliber. It operates 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 70-hour power reserve, just like the Breitling Chronomat we just discussed. It is a rugged and reliable powertrain for the Tudor Black Bay Chrono.

Rolex Daytona alternatives — panda and reverse-panda Tudor Black Bay Chrono models side by side, flat-lay

In terms of bracelets, last year, Tudor began offering the standard Black Bay Chrono last year with a Jubilee-style five-row bracelet alongside the already-standard Oyster-style bracelets with faux rivets. The previously mentioned pink- and turquoise-dial models also came with the five-row racelet and were well received by Tudor fans.

On the Jubilee-style bracelet, the Black Bay Chrono costs €6,300, while on the Oyster-style bracelet, it retails for €6,190. I prefer the latter, but I can certainly see the charm of the five-row bracelet and understand why it has become a popular option. Either way, the Tudor Black Bay Chrono takes the charm of the classic manual-winding Daytonas and adds a modern spin to it, making it a nice fourth option for this list of alternatives.

Rolex Daytona alternatives — Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph SSC955 crown up

SSC955

Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph

As has become tradition, we’ll finish the list with an affordable alternative. For this week’s budget-friendly pick, we turn to Seiko’s Prospex Speedtimer lineup. The Japanese watchmaking juggernaut offers two Solar Chronograph series that are great options. The first is a line of 41.4mm models that I first wrote about in 2022. But we picked the slightly smaller 39mm series as the perfect affordable option. These sub-40mm Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph models feature a stainless steel case with a 13.3mm total thickness and a 45.5mm lug-to-lug. Consequently, they are more modestly sized, making them great options for people with smaller wrists.

SSC937

Seiko offers different versions of the watch with either a regular stainless steel bezel, like the SSC959 that Thomas wrote about, or a black-coated bezel, like the SSC955 that I reviewed. In both configurations, the watch is a great sporty racing chronograph. Seiko offers both versions with a series of colorful dials that look really good. Finishing the look of all the models is the super comfortable three-row bracelet. Depending on your preferred version, the bracelet is either fully brushed or features a mix of brushed and polished links.

The solar-powered caliber V192 offers great everyday practicality

Inside the case, Seiko uses its solar-powered V192 quartz movement. The big advantage is that it offers modern-day practicality with a six-month power reserve on a full charge. Additionally, the chronograph caliber features a date complication, visible through the aperture at 4:30 on the dial. On top of that, the mechanical action of the chronograph is rather nice when you use the pushers to start, stop, and reset it.

The latest additions to Seiko’s collection are the beautiful SSC961 and SSC963, both with a black bezel. The SSC961 pairs it with a white panda dial, whereas the SSC963 introduces a soft pink dial that looks really nice. Completing the trio of new releases is the SSC965, which features a steel bezel and a light green dial. At €750 each, all three models are great racing chronographs and perfect affordable final options for this list.
