Last year, Singer Reimagined surprised us with the Heritage Chronograph Collection with a restored and rebuilt Valjoux 236 movement. This model debuted in both green and black dial colorways, and a very limited run of 10 pieces with a “Terracotta” dial was then shown at Dubai Watch Week. Now, Singer Reimagined unveils its next Heritage model, this time powered by the iconic Valjoux 72 movement.

Singer Reimagined Heritage V72

Let’s start with that famous caliber. The use of a fully restored and refinished Valjoux 72 movement also means there’s now a third subdial. This gives the Singer Reimagined Heritage chronograph a Compax or “three-register” dial configuration. The case itself (38.8mm diameter) is the same as on last year’s model, but the use of two “glassbox” sapphire crystals (one on the front, and one on the back) increases the thickness from 11.75mm to 13.25mm.

But worth it, if you ask me, as the glassbox sapphire crystal on the case back gives an amazing effect. It displays the restored hand-wound movement in all its glory.

An iconic chronograph movement

I don’t think the Valjoux 72 movement needs any introduction here. It’s an iconic caliber that could be found in some of the best-known chronographs (Rolex’s Cosmograph Daytona, Breitling’s Navitimer, Heuer’s Carrera, and, of course, Universal Genève Compax), but also in the lesser-known ones from Enicar, Girard-Perregaux, etc. And just as with the Valjoux 236 chronograph they restored, the Valjoux 72 is also being completely disassembled, finished, and decorated with hand-polished chamfers, frosting on the bridges, polished screw heads, and a blued switch component near the column-wheel. Singer Reimagined has sourced NOS Valjoux 72 movements for these 70 watches (50 in steel, 20 in gold).

Two new dial designs

The stainless steel Singer Reimagined Heritage V72 features a beautiful, velvety matte stone-grey dial with oyster-colored subdials with concentric circle pattern (or azurage). On the gold version, you will find a beautiful matte-black dial with champagne subdials, featuring the same decorative finish as the steel model. Both dials feature the famous toothed flange, in gold.

The azurage minute track on both models has gold-applied faceted indexes, and the applied Singer logo is also in gold. The hands have the typical Singer signature, filled with orange Super-LumiNova and rhodium-plated finishing. The chronograph’s seconds hand is coated with Singer’s signature orange paint, and in the center, you’ll find that big gold cabochon.

The first gold Singer Reimagined Heritage

I can only applaud Singer for making this watch available in 18K yellow gold (reference SR620-1). And I have to say, it does look very good. It has a bit of a Paul Newman vibe without the slightest touch of a Daytona (except for the movement, of course). It’s a striking combination of gold, black, and champagne. The 18K yellow gold uses the 1N color grade, meaning it consists of 75% gold combined with more silver than copper, which gives it a paler color. The steel version (reference SR261) shares the same case dimensions as the gold version, and both have the same finishing.  The cases have this deep sunray satin finish and mirror-polished chamfers. As written above, the case measures 38.8mm in diameter and has a thickness of 13.25mm.

Final thoughts

Without having seen the watch in the flesh, I have to say that, based on my experience wearing the Singer Reimagined Heritage Chronograph with Valjoux 236, I am incredibly curious about this one. The people at Singer were so kind as to lend me one during the last Watches and Wonders exhibition, and it is a very comfortable watch. The dimensions and aesthetics of this new version are similar, but the Valjoux 72 brings a new dial layout, of course. I think I actually prefer this new Singer Reimagined Heritage V72 to last year’s model based on the images. And I was already raving about that one.

The new dial color on the steel model is beautiful and combines nicely with the oyster-colored subdials. It’s a very subtle contrast that comes mainly from the gold flange and hour markers, and they fit the stone-grey dial nicely. The gold edition is stunning as well, but I would have a tough time deciding between the two. Where I would usually go gold, the stone-grey dial with the steel model’s gold elements makes for a very attractive combination.
