Introducing: The CIGA Design Blue Planet II Atlantic
CIGA Design makes distinctive-looking watches. Perfectly round cases and dials with depictions of the Earth offer something truly different in a market full of traditional timepieces. Until now, though, these planetary watches have featured the Pacific Ocean and Asia. Finally, we have a new Blue Planet II Atlantic for those connected to other parts of the globe.
Admittedly, watches from CIGA Design have surprised me. I find them interesting, but I wasn’t sure what our readers would think. The truth is that most people enjoy the concept of a rotating globe display as a fun way to tell time. What they didn’t always connect with, however, was the brand’s focus on the Pacific Ocean. It made sense, though, because CIGA is a Chinese-based company. Perhaps after finding enough success with its previous releases, the new Blue Planet II Atlantic is finally available.
The CIGA Design Blue Planet II Atlantic
One look at the new Atlantic makes it abundantly clear that this is a CIGA Design watch. Indeed, it’s nearly identical to the existing Pacific Ocean version. This translates to a 46mm lugless case made of either titanium or stainless steel. The watch has a 17.05mm thickness, which may sound imposing, but it’s mostly the result of a sapphire crystal that follows the UFO-like case curvature. A comfortable blue fluororubber strap gives off sporty vibes and comes equipped with a titanium or steel butterfly clasp. Despite the water-resistant strap, this watch is better off staying on land with its 3ATM water resistance.
Focusing on a different part of the globe
The Blue Planet II Atlantic will be a welcome addition for many of our readers, who hail mostly from the USA, the UK, and mainland Europe. The watch now features North America, South America, and Europe. The intricate details are created using a CNC process. Of special note are the Rocky Mountains, the Gulf of Mexico/America, and the Mediterranean.
How it works
Functionally, the Blue Planet II Atlantic works in the same way as previous versions. Both the globe and internal ring rotate at different speeds. The arrow from the compass rose is used to read the time as it points to the inner minute ring and outer hour ring.
The watch uses the custom-designed, Swiss-made CD-04-E automatic movement. It’s visible through a screw-in display case back. Spec-wise, this caliber has 40 hours of power reserve and a frequency of 21,600vph. Those figures may not sound overly impressive, but the point of the caliber is the unique time-telling complication.
Final thoughts on the Blue Planet II Atlantic
The latest CIGA Design Blue Planet II Atlantic may not be remarkably different from past models, but it brings an important change that should make it more appealing for Western buyers. That means the whole globe should be able to wear one of these watches and feel connected to whatever part of the world they desire. The prices remain the same as the other Blue Planet II watches at US$1,199 for the stainless steel version and US$1,399 Blue Planet II Atlantic for the titanium option. However, from now through June 25th, the watches are available at special pre-launch prices of US$1,049 for steel and US$1,249 for titanium when using this bespoke link.
