Today, Parmigiani Fleurier announces a new variant of the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante. The Arctic Rose continues to display how the upscale brand masters color and shares new hues on its watches. This is a watch with a decidedly practical complication housed in a luxurious form. Let’s take a brief look.

My close acquaintances all know that I’m quietly on the hunt. Ever since I moved to London and attended a Parmigiani Fleurier event within the first month of my arrival, I’ve wanted one of the brand’s watches. Specifically, I’d like a 36mm Tonda PF with a Stone Blue dial if you’re feeling generous. However, despite my laser focus on this watch, I’m able to appreciate the rest of the brand’s wares. Today’s Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante is a great example of how Parmigiani introduces complications to its watches without making them look complicated. Yes, the Arctic Rose is a color variant, but it’s so lovely that it’s worth a feature.

The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante

Let’s kick this debut off with the basics before we get to the specifics on how this movement functions. The newest Parmigiani is a stainless steel watch with a reeded 950 platinum bezel, a 40mm diameter, and a 10.7mm thickness. The latter dimension may seem a tad thick, but the complication provides the reason. Naturally, the watch has an integrated three-row bracelet with a beautifully concealed flush-mounted clasp. Like all of the brand’s watches, this piece is meant to be worn, and it offers a 60m water resistance rating.

Another gorgeous dial — now in Arctic Rose

The latest Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante has a subtle dial in Arctic Rose, a light pink with a hint of gray. This translates to a color that works well for both sexes and sits well against a variety of skin tones. The signature Grain d’Orge hand-guilloché finishing is resolutely devoid of distractions. In fact, the only additions are the applied PF logo and the 18K gold rhodium-plated indexes. Some seem to appreciate a more populated dial, but I find this perfect. Skeletonized hands in rhodium display the hours and minutes. But there’s more…

A fun complication

A rose gold hand quietly hides below the rhodium-plated minute hand and moves unnoticed throughout the day. However, depressing the 10 o’clock pusher forwards the hand in one-minute increments, while the 8 o’clock pusher advances it by five. This allows the wearer to count down the minutes until the main minute hand meets the forward hand. At any point, a gold pusher on the crown can be actuated to return the rose gold hand to its hidden location. It’s practical yet simple.

The power behind the complication

From my vantage point, Parmigiani Fleurier makes some of the most beautiful calibers available today. Côtes de Genève, perlage, and anglage shine brightly on all of the brand’s movements. These techniques are echoed on the PF052, a micro-rotor automatic caliber with 48 hours of power reserve and a frequency of 21,600vph. Visually, it’s a lovely piece, and the highly finished 22K gold rotor makes its presence known.

Availability

The Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante joins the serial-production catalog and is available at authorized dealers. Parmigiani Fleurier did not provide pricing, but we expect this model to follow its stablemates with a cost of CHF 29,700. Is this expensive? Sure, but if you’ve never tried on a Tonda PF, the proof of the pudding is definitely in the eating. These watches are sublimely finished and easily punch in the same weight class as the big names in the genre. Honestly, I’d love one!
