Bauhaus Meets The Atelier: How Nomos Turned Its Dials Into Art For The Twice Unique Collection

I still remember running from booth to booth during Watches and Wonders when an email from Nomos arrived in my inbox. It introduced the brand’s new Twice Unique collection and immediately looked like an eclectic new initiative. With this new collection, Nomos celebrates collaboration and creative freedom, allowing the brand to experiment. The dials in the Tetra, Tangente 33, Tangente Neomatik 38, Ludwig, and Orion serve as blank canvases for trying out new colors, techniques, and textures. These five “base” watches will be available in unique made-to-order pairs. Each pair consists of one watch in stainless steel and another in 18K yellow gold, both sharing one of the nine new dial designs.

Of course, we know Nomos isn’t afraid of using a variety of colors in its Bauhaus-style timepieces. However, in terms of texture and crafting techniques, there are fewer options. The new Twice Unique collection allows the brand to explore new dial finishes in collaboration with designers and artists. Let’s see what that looks like.

Nomos Twice Unique Tangente Neomatik 38 Urania

As mentioned, there are nine dial variations available to choose from. As an example, Nomos sent us the Twice Unique Urania in the Tangente 38 Neomatik. Both the stainless steel and gold versions feature a dark blue dial with clean gold-tone Bauhaus-style printing. However, in this case, the dial is also covered with tiny silver dots, which were applied with the finest mouse-hair brush. It also has many printed dots containing Super-LumiNova. These light up in darker situations and actually resemble a starry night sky.

The silver non-luminous dots are applied by hand, meaning every dial is unique. It’s very cool to see this more improvised design on a Nomos watch. It’s a big departure from the brand’s clean aesthetics, but that’s exactly why it works so well. What’s even cooler is that you can choose your favorite Nomos case design, as long as it’s a Tetra 27, a Tangente 33 or 38, a Ludwig, or an Orion. You can even decide whether to keep the original hour markers. Let’s go over a few more examples.

Nomos Twice Unique Ludwig Drift

Instead of going for Urania’s starry night sky, you can also opt for the smoky blue Drift. This dial is dyed by hand, resulting in a fine texture. It also receives a subtle gradient, creating a nice drift from a cooler light blue in the center to a warmer dark blue on the edge of the dial. Gradient dials are very popular these days, but I had never imagined one in a Nomos watch. Honestly, it feels a bit strange, as Nomos isn’t the typical brand that hops on the next trend wagon, but I guess the design itself works. All right, let’s check out another one.

Nomos Twice Unique Tetra 1966

The Nomos Twice Unique 1966 is one of the most playful options. The design was created in 1966 in Paris, but it still works very well in today’s world, and especially in the 27.5mm square Tetra case. I’d probably also leave the printing out, as it would interfere with the background too much. This is another great example of a design I would’ve never expected Nomos to come up with, but again, it works.

Nomos Twice Unique Ludwig Rive Gauche

Another playful, colorful option is the Nomos Twice Unique Rive Gauche. The dial pattern stems from 1960s textile designs. The design is transferred using a four-color pad printing process. This, again, makes each dial unique. The great thing is that Nomos’s case designs are so recognizable that you can still very well identify these as Nomos watches.

Five more options

In addition to the four dial design options above, there are five more to choose from. Auric is probably one of the most interesting thanks to its hand-applied layers of gold leaf. Next up, there’s Now, with its mirror-like lapped dial. The production process involves hours of meticulous handwork, abrasive paste, and water. This dial makes any Nomos look even cleaner than it already does. Then, there is Moirée, which features a subtle wave pattern. I’m not sure if I’m a big fan of this one, but I’d love to see more guilloché on Nomos dials in the future. Finally, there’s Scribble in light and dark variations. The ruthenium-coated dials were hand-engraved with flowing loops. It almost looks like a child was left alone at the Nomos manufacture. The dials look playful yet elegant and luxurious thanks to the gold tones.

Made to order

The watches in the Nomos Twice Unique collection are made to order, and pricing is available upon request. The designs I presented to you will be available to order until the end of the year. After that, the brand will introduce new designs for 2027.

I love this initiative by Nomos. In a way, it allows customers to customize the watches to their liking. The fact that they need to buy both a stainless steel and an 18K gold version isn’t for everyone. However, it’s a great way to keep the Twice Unique watches quite exclusive.
