Tantalizing Tantalum: The Atelier Wen × Massena Lab Inflection Shuò
Truth be told, the original Atelier Wen Inflection already felt like a statement. A young brand executing an integrated-bracelet sports watch in 99.9% pure tantalum, pairing it with grand feu enamel, and backing it with a customized Girard-Perregaux movement was ambitious. Now comes the Inflection Shuò, a collaboration with New York-based Massena Lab that elevates the platform further. Presented at Hôtel Eastwest during Geneva Watch Days 2026, this limited edition of just 50 pieces introduces two extraordinarily finished 18K gold dials featuring hand tremblage. The duo of Atelier Wen × Massena LAB Inflection Shuò watches certainly deserves a closer look.
We’ve covered Atelier Wen since the early days of porcelain and guilloché. The brand has progressed from offering accessible pieces like the Perception and Ancestra to the tantalum Inflection. Now, Massena Lab, founded by William Massena, has joined forces with the brand to offer a different but complementary approach to the tantalum wonder. Massena and Atelier Wen’s founders first connected in New York in 2023. Later, Massena visited Atelier Wen’s workshops in China, which sealed the idea. The result is the Shuò (烁), a name drawn from the Chinese character meaning “sparkling,” “glittering,” or “radiant.” All these terms are apt descriptors of the dials.
Two extraordinary dials for the Inflection Shuò
Both Inflection Shuò variants start with a solid 18K gold base plate finished by hand with tremblage. To create the dials, Swiss engraver Coralie Mercier uses a graver across the gold surface while continuously oscillating the dial. The process creates thousands of tiny, irregular granulations that catch and scatter light. It is one of the rarest and most difficult métiers d’art techniques in watchmaking because a single slip ruins the piece.
Then, there is a textured white or rose gold concentrically brushed hour sector. The layout is inspired by California dials, but there’s a twist we’ve never seen. The top half uses hand-engraved custom serif Arabic numerals, while the lower sector displays hand-drawn Chinese numerals. All these are filled with blue to match the blued-steel tri-planed leaf hands. The outermost sector ring receives further tremblage and is framed by a finely engraved huiwen border, a familiar trait on Atelier Wen watches. The classic Chinese geometric motif echoes the character 回. Both collaborators show their signatures on the dial, with “Atelier Wen” as a blued detail at the top and “Massena” along the lower edge.
Tantalum, mastered
Like the original Inflection, the Inflection Shuò features a case and integrated bracelet made from 99.9% tantalum. The 40mm width, 45mm length, and 10.2mm thickness are also consistent. The last number includes the double-domed sapphire crystal with its five layers of antireflective coating. The Inflection Shuò also has a 100m water resistance rating and a screw-down crown in either gold or tantalum (depending on the variant), ensuring it’s a capable everyday watch. From a comfort perspective, Atelier Wen has created a watch that fits the curvature of the wrist beautifully. Despite the challenging case material, there are virtually no flat planes within the design.
The bracelet finishing shows vertical brushing and mirror-polished center links, with concave polished chamfers throughout. The clasp incorporates a patent-pending on-the-fly micro-adjustment system, a telescopic deployant system, and quick-release spring bars.
A beautiful movement
Powering the Inflection Shuò is the same customized Girard-Perregaux caliber GP03300 used in the original Inflection. The curved, sweeping bridges draw inspiration from wind motifs found in historical Chinese paintings, creating strong contrast with the tantalum case. The plates and bridges receive dark gray ruthenium plating, dramatic anglage, sharp exterior angles, and laser-etched wavy côtes radiating from the center. Black-polished screws and a custom wind-inspired rotor plated in 5N rose gold complete the view through the exhibition back. The performance specifications include hacking seconds, a 28,800vph frequency, approximately 48 hours of power reserve, and adjustment to five positions.
Availability and pricing
The Atelier Wen × Massena Lab Inflection Shuò is available now for order by inquiry via the product pages on the Atelier Wen and Massena Lab websites. Deliveries will begin in small batches in early 2027. Pricing is set at CHF 33,800 (excluding taxes) for either dial. Of the small production run of 50 pieces, 10 feature the all-white-gold dial and are reserved for established clients of either brand. The remaining 40 combine white and rose gold and are open to the public. I still enjoy the original Inflection for its incredible case, lovely fit, and overall design. Let’s also not forget the impressive movement, which is truly stunning to view through the display case back. Collaborations don’t always tickle my fancy, but these pieces add some great design touches along with true dial craftsmanship. I think they’re very well conceived indeed.
