Celebrating With The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin 30th Anniversary
Today, Vacheron Constantin launches a special Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin to celebrate the collection’s 30th anniversary. This limited edition of 200 pieces pairs an 18K white gold case with a new, lighter azure dial. Although the underlying watch debuted in 2016, the Overseas Perpetual Calendar remains one of the thinnest full-calendar integrated-bracelet sporty watches available.
It’s hard to believe that Vacheron Constantin first released the Overseas in 1996. Since then, the collection has gained updates and numerous variants. One such option is the Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin. This watch celebrated the model line’s 20th anniversary. So, fittingly, it has been chosen again for birthday duties. As we’ll see, it gains a new dial that, quite openly, seems appropriate for the regular catalog. Sadly, though, this piece won’t be around for long.
Three decades of travel-inspired design
The Overseas collection first appeared in 1996 as the modern successor to the 1977 model 222. Designers crafted its signature screw-secured bezel and integrated bracelet as an ode to exploration. Then, in 2004, the second generation introduced a bolder look with Maltese-cross-inspired links. In 2016, the current generation arrived with more fluid lines and a toolless strap-change system. This upped the everyday versatility, turning the Overseas into a watch capable of handling most activities. Since the 2016 redesign, the collection has expanded into titanium, platinum, and complicated movements while keeping its recognizable identity. Today’s release is an example of the third category.
A fresh azure dial and white gold
For this 41.5mm anniversary piece, Vacheron Constantin chose a new, lighter shade of azure blue. The color feels less saturated than the deeper blue introduced in 2016 and is meant to evoke open skies and distant horizons. Lacquer layers give it visual depth that shifts with the light. Furthermore, the matching blue moonphase disc creates perfect harmony across the calendar indications. Vacheron has chosen 18K white gold for the applied hour markers, hands, and moon. Blue-emitting Super-LumiNova accents on the hands and markers ensure legibility after dark.
The 4.1mm-thick caliber 1120 QP/1 inside
The self-winding caliber 1120 QP/1 ranks among the thinnest perpetual-calendar movements in production. Its 276 components automatically handle months with 28, 30, and 31 days, as well as leap years until 2100. A 22K gold oscillating weight engraved with a compass rose continues the theme of exploration. From a finishing perspective, the movement is replete with Côtes de Genève, beveled bridges, and perlage. The rear details are visible via a screw-in case back with a sapphire lens.
Versatile strap system
Like every modern Overseas, this model arrives with three interchangeable strap options. An integrated bracelet in matching white gold features the signature half-Maltese-cross links and a micro-adjustment clasp. Owners also receive white and denim-blue rubber straps along with an interchangeable case-matching gold pin buckle. Therefore, the watch can shift from formal to casual without tools or extra equipment. In any guise, the watch is ready to take advantage of its 50m water resistance.
Limited availability
Vacheron Constantin will produce just 200 examples of the Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin (ref. 4300V/220G-H119). For this storied Swiss brand, the watch is a classy and relatively understated way to celebrate an anniversary. I’d expect collectors, or buyers considering the Overseas in general, to definitely take notice of this new, limited piece. While we don’t have an official price at the time of publishing this article, we can assume that it will be offered at a similar cost to the regular editions, which start at €142,000.
