IFL Watches Revisits Edvard Munch’s Iconic Work With The Bulova Super Seville Scream
The world of art is an endless source of inspiration for the team at IFL Watches. The artists who hand-paint the dials of the limited-edition creations show great versatility in storytelling. Their often modern, street-art-inspired style also leads to intriguing standout creations. For its latest release, IFLW presents its take on the world-famous Edvard Munch painting The Scream. The canvas for this is the Bulova Super Seville, which the Dubai-based brand has used for a variety of unique dials. But this 300-piece limited edition has a nice neon trick up its sleeve that makes it stand out even more. Let’s take a look.
For those unfamiliar with The Scream, Norwegian artist Edvard Munch created it after a walk above an Oslo fjord at dusk in 1893. He watched the sky turn blood red and, in his words, “sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.” He translated that onto a canvas by giving that moment a figure with its hands pressed to its face. More than 130 years later, the work remains one of the most iconic pieces of art ever created.
The inspiration behind the Bulova Super Seville Scream
But Munch did not create just one version of this painting. The most famous version is on display in a specially dimmed room at the National Museum in Oslo. But the Munch Museum in Oslo houses another painted version from 1910 and a pastel version from 1893. Munch even created several lithographs and sketches that are also on rotating display in the museum named after him.
Why am I telling the story of multiple versions of the artwork? It goes to show that The Scream has long existed in different executions. On top of that, it has inspired countless artists to create modern versions of the famous work. That tradition makes this modern recreation by IFL Watches another interesting take on a work that Munch himself recreated multiple times.
The details of the Super Seville Scream
The retro-styled Bulova Super Seville features a stainless steel case with a 37.5mm diameter, 10.5mm thickness, and 42.3mm lug-to-lug. To create their take on The Scream, IFLW chose the blue-dial version of the watch, which features applied hour markers. As a result, reading the time is never an issue despite the colorful artwork. Additionally, the chapter ring features a white minute track and Roman numerals for the hours. Not only does it make checking the time easy, but it also nicely frames the painting. Lastly, the date window integrates well into the overall design. On a non-painted dial, it immediately draws the eye, but the colorful art surrounding it here helps it blend in more.
The artists at IFLW have recreated The Scream in the brand’s modern pop-art style, giving Munch’s anguished subject KAWS-inspired crossed-out eyes. Surrounding the figure is a brightly colored depiction of the Norwegian setting.
The combination of elements makes the work instantly recognizable as a modern take on The Scream. In terms of execution, the neon paint chosen gives the dial a bright, colorful presence that I like. But that’s not where it ends. The paint used also lets the artwork glow under UV light. It’s a nice trick that will definitely put a smile on the wearer’s face.
Final details and impressions of the new IFLW Bulova Super Seville Scream
Completing the watch’s exterior is an integrated three-row bracelet, which makes it super comfortable on the wrist. Inside the case, you will find the Bulova NM10 Precisionist movement. It is a high-precision caliber with a 262kHz frequency. It is accurate to within a few seconds per year and can withstand extreme temperature changes.
As I have explained before, a fun detail is that the seconds hand glides smoothly over the dial, mimicking a high-beat mechanical movement. It adds a touch of mechanical romance to the watch. But most of all, the accurate power train is the perfect choice for this ’70s-inspired timepiece with its distinct, colorful dial.
IFLW will produce 300 pieces of the new Bulova Super Seville Scream, which will go on sale today at 16:00 CEST for €1,190 / US$1,190 / £990.
