For many of us, at least native English speakers, our brains seem “wired” to read from left to right, top to bottom. Now, scientifically speaking, doing this is learned behavior, but our parents drill it into us from the first time we pick up a picture book. Indeed, we do crave linear progression. And as much as we don’t like to admit it, we’d much rather have information spoon-fed to us than have to work for it. This is why the traditional watch layout has reigned supreme for centuries. A watch with two or three hands? Perfect. It gives our lazy brains exactly what they crave. But the Trilobe Château Trente-Deux has no interest in making our lives easy.

The Trente-Deux collection, which debuted in 2025, was Trilobe’s first family of watches with an integrated bracelet and a movement produced fully in the brand’s Paris manufacture. Expanding the collection further, this latest iteration channels inspiration from fine French winemaking. It replaces traditional hands with three rotating discs for hours, minutes, and seconds, all moving counterclockwise against a deep burgundy dial. Admittedly, mastering this unconventional display may require a moment of patience at first. However, the Trente-Deux way quickly becomes second nature once you come to grips with it, perhaps while indulging in a glass or two of red.

Trilobe Château Trente-Deux on wine-inspired artwork

Trilobe Château Trente-Deux — a deep burgundy vintage

The name “Trente-Deux” is a nod to the address of Trilobe’s workshop in Paris, while “Château” refers to the French-winemaking-inspired dial color. Instead of leaning into the usual clichés that plague so many “beverage-inspired” watches, Trilobe handles the theme maturely, adding a matte sunburst finish to the dial’s handsome burgundy shades. If you’ve ever held a glass of mature Grand Cru up to the light, you’ll know exactly what Trilobe was aiming for here. The dial swallows ambient light, yielding an incredibly rich, velvety texture that keeps the display shifting between deep shadows and rich burgundy tones.

Trilobe Château Trente-Deux head on

Trilobe displays time through its patented layout of three rotating rings moving past fixed pointers on a single plane. A rotating outer ring tracks the hours, while the minutes and seconds sit within a decentralized figure-eight layout on the left side of the dial, reminiscent of the brand’s Nuit Fantastique collection. Texture plays a crucial role on this dial. The hour and minute discs feature a finely grained finish, while the constantly running seconds wheel combines sharp azurage with a crisp Clous de Paris guilloché center. An applied steel chapter ring neatly frames the entire display, alternating between mirror-polished and satin-brushed surfaces. It sounds like a lot of mechanical chaos on paper, but the execution is remarkably disciplined.

The seven-part case

With a 39.5mm diameter, 46.18mm length, and 10.15mm thickness, the Château Trente-Deux’s case puts 316L stainless steel to good use. It comprises seven individual components that, from a watchmaker’s perspective, can be a bit of a headache to assemble. By breaking the case into multiple tiers, Trilobe alternates mirror-polished surfaces with satin brushing and microblasted areas. The fluted bezel is a particular highlight, featuring polished ridges set against microblasted grooves that catch the light. It flows seamlessly into an integrated stainless steel bracelet and closes with a butterfly clasp.

The X-Nihilo heart

The Château Trente-Deux is powered by Trilobe’s in-house automatic caliber, the X-Nihilo. This 7mm-thick movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, offers a 42-hour power reserve, and undergoes more than 400 hours of testing in the brand’s Paris workshop. The 34-jewel movement also comprises 218 components and an open island that puts the magnified balance wheel front and center through a sapphire display.

Final notes

At €17,500 (ex. tax), the Trilobe Château Trente-Deux is not a casual impulse purchase. However, it still sits in a competitive bracket given its in-house mechanics and case architecture. The first 100 pieces will come with a bottle of French Grand Cru wine, personally selected by the maison, and presented in a custom-built case alongside the watch.

After those first 100 pieces are gone, the Château Trente-Deux will join the permanent collection. Is it for everyone? Absolutely not. If you want a watch you can read instantly, buy a standard three-hander. But if you want a piece of independent Parisian horology that challenges convention, Trilobe has crafted something genuinely special here.
