Since I’ve become a father myself in 2013, I realize how much can go wrong with your child. How much there is to worry about and how lucky you sometimes feel when nothing went wrong or is wrong with your kid. One of the nightmares of any parent is to end up in a hospital with your child because something is (seriously) wrong. I am often heartbroken when I see children suffering from a disease, like cancer, having to deal with hospital stays, connected to all sorts of tubes and are not able to enjoy their childhood as they should. In the world, approximately 250000 children and teens get cancer every year. Childhood cancer is still the most common cause of death in the ages 1–14. Life can be so unfair, even at very young age.
This is something that Petter Berggren from the Swedish authorized dealer Bo Berggren Urhandel also must have realized. He wrote me: “The idea for this came to me more than a year ago when the SpeedyTuesday was launched, having a product which sold out so fast on my own wrist didn’t feel quite right (even though I love the watch). I made the decision to auction this piece for charity. By doing this I hope our local competitors will step up to the challenge and also contribute to a better world.”. There is little I can add to that.
Bo Berggren Urhandel is a small independent authorized dealer for brands like Omega, Patek Philippe, Breitling and Bvlgari. He is the third generation to run the family business, started by his grandfather Bo Berggren.
The Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday that will be auctioned is No. 785/2012. Perhaps nice if you’re from July 1985 or know someone who is or want to commemorate the Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51-F mission from July 1985. Or just to sponsor a good cause: that of fighting childhood cancer.
Kaplans’ auction will take place on May 19th, at 1pm. The current bid is 50000 Kr (~ €4875 or $5815USD), so I feel there’s some room for more. The full proceedings (including the 20% buyer’s premium and hammer fee) of this sale will benefit the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation (click here for their website). This foundation works to ensure that affected children, teens and their families receive the care and support they need. All details about this lot and auction can be found here (also in English).
On top, the winner of Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 785/2012 will be invited to Omega in Switzerland for a tour. We reached out to Omega because we fully support this cause and it did not take them a second to give this additional ‘prize’ to the winner of the lot. We hope this will make your ‘Speedy Tuesday’ experience complete!
