Taking The The Atelier Wen × Massena Lab Inflection Shuò For A Spin

I first handled the original Atelier Wen Inflection last year. Its full-tantalum construction was impressive due to the difficulty of working with the material. Plus, the weight was memorable. Last month, the brand announced a collaboration with Massena Lab and introduced the new Inflection Shuò. It builds on the original’s already substantial foundation and adds something special. Together, the two collaborators have created a distinct-feeling limited edition with an entirely different character.

Atelier Wen and Massena Lab first connected in New York during 2023. As we mentioned in our initial article, William Massena later traveled to the Chinese workshops where various components would be produced. He saw the team’s commitment to high-level craft. Consequently, a joint project began to form. The name Inflection Shuò draws from the Chinese character for “sparkling” or “radiant” (烁). These descriptions perfectly describe the impressive dials.

The Inflection Shuò boasts dial craft that catches every light

Let’s get right into our thoughts because we have many. Instead of starting with the basic specifications, let’s begin with the detail that hit us in the solar plexus when we opened the shipping boxes. The Inflection Shuò centers on its solid 18K gold dials. Coralie Mercier of GT Cadrans executes the hand tremblage by working a graver across the surface while constantly moving the substrate. This creates thousands of tiny, irregular facets, resulting in a shimmering surface that sparkles under any light. It’s magnificent and incredibly different from the regular series models. While the facets are randomly created, the process should not be viewed as sloppy. In fact, the technique leaves almost no room for error. One slip ruins the whole dial.

A cohesive design

A concentrically brushed hour sector sits above the tremblage base. This is constructed from 18K white or rose gold depending on the version. The layout borrows from California dials yet adds a clear twist. Custom serif Arabic numerals occupy the upper half, while hand-calligraphed Chinese numerals fill the lower half. All numerals receive a blue filling. Furthermore, the blued steel leaf hands echo that color. An outer ring carries more tremblage, and a precise huiwen border frames everything. Atelier Wen signs the dial in blue below 12 o’clock, while “Massena” appears above 6 o’clock in white gold. All told, the California layout may be familiar, but the tweaks are significant enough to appear novel.

A tantalum case that refuses flat surfaces

The Inflection Shuò keeps the 40 × 45mm tantalum case from the original Inflection, and the 10.25mm thickness, including the sapphire crystal, remains reasonable. What sets the design apart from familial models like the Perception, though, is that almost every surface curves. Adding complexity, a concave bezel and ridged mid-case contribute visual depth. The metal itself shows a cool blue-gray tone, but it’s darker than titanium. Moreover, tantalum brings serious density and excellent corrosion resistance. The screw-down crown matches the dial: tantalum on the white gold version and rose gold on the two-tone version. Finally, the case offers a useful 100m water resistance rating.

The integrated bracelet continues the same curved language. Vertical brushing covers the outer links, while the center links stay mirror-polished. Impressively, concave chamfers run throughout. Also, a patent-pending micro-adjustment system sits inside the clasp, allowing wearers to fine-tune the fit without tools or removal.

The GP03300 is customized with Chinese wind motifs

A customized Girard-Perregaux GP03300 automatic movement powers the Inflection Shuò. Its ruthenium-plated bridges follow sweeping curves inspired by wind patterns in classical Chinese painting. Atelier Wen has set out to prove that this watch deserves to stand tall among its competitors. As a result, dramatic anglage and sharp angles define the bridge edges. Laser-etched wavy stripes radiate outward, and black-polished screws add contrast. Strikingly, the matching skeletonized rotor carries a plating of 5N rose gold. The caliber beats at 28,800 vph, delivers roughly 48 hours of power reserve, and has 27 jewels.

Wearing the Inflection Shuò

We’ve stated this before, but tantalum’s density makes the watch feel incredibly substantial on the wrist. Yet the fully curved case and short lug-to-lug keep the Inflection Shuò immensely comfortable. Plus, the excellent bracelet follows the arm’s natural shape, and the micro-adjustable clasp allows the fit to change easily during the day as one’s wrist shrinks and grows. Legibility is great thanks to a double-domed sapphire crystal that stays clear at every angle. Five layers of antireflective coating have served a purpose! Of course, the dial is the superstar here, and the shimmering facets never stop revealing their presence.

Ordering the Inflection Shuò

The Inflection Shuò is currently available on the Atelier Wen and Massena Lab websites. There were only 50 total examples, each retailing for €35,900 / US$44,100 before taxes. Repeat customers have already bought the 10 versions with white gold hour rings and crowns, but remaining versions with rose gold components are available to order. Deliveries will begin in small groups during early 2027. Atelier Wen founder Robin Tallendier describes the project as proof that Chinese watchmaking can reach the highest contemporary level. William Massena notes that Massena Lab had never collaborated with a Chinese watchmaker. The decision of both to come together has yielded a genuinely satisfying fusion of Swiss dial artistry and watchmaking with a Chinese design language and impressive material selection. The best news is that the end product simply works. After our time with the new watches, we expect that the limited run should find eager homes among collectors who value both materials and craft.
