Channeling My Inner Explorer With The Brand-New Héron Continental

Héron has slowly been expanding its catalog. Earlier this year, the young Montreal-based brand introduced updated versions of its Marinor dive watch, which Mike reviewed. Now, Héron is introducing the completely new Continental collection. It’s a series of three vintage-inspired sports watches that work well for daily wear thanks to their modern execution. I got to go hands-on with the cream-dial version. I found it to be a perfect option for people looking for an affordable watch built for “going places.”

When I first saw the Héron Continental, I mostly saw the charm of a Rolex Explorer ref. 1016 or the original Omega Railmaster. The brand doesn’t shy away from those references, adding the Universal Genève Poulerouter to the mix. These iconic watches are the visual inspiration for the Héron Continental collection. According to the brand, though, the Continental draws inspiration from these legendary timepieces and reinterprets the genre through a sportier, more contemporary lens. While the Continental retains the compact proportions and highly legible dial style of explorer’s watches, the hardened-steel case and bracelet, refined finishing, and lacquered or sunray dials inject the classic design with modern touches. As a result, the Continental reflects the category’s evolution past its utilitarian roots.

The details of the Héron Continental collection

Let’s go over the details of the Héron Continental watches. The three models feature a 37 × 43 × 8.5mm stainless steel case with an 11mm total profile, including the domed sapphire crystal. Inside this 100m-water-resistant exterior is a two-layer sandwich dial available in sunray blue, sunray black, or lacquered cream.

These dials all have a luminous base and a top layer with cut-out numerals. The black version features a white base layer and orange dots at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock. The blue-dial version features a more neutral aesthetic with a crisp underlayer and dots. Lastly, the cream-dial version we received has an Old Radium Super-LumiNova base layer to add warmth to the overall look. It also has the four orange dots, which add a nice, funky touch.

All three watches feature an arrow-shaped hour hand, a sword-style minute hand, and a thin seconds hand. The hour and minute hands are filled with lume that matches the dial’s luminous base.

All three dials feature an open minute track on the periphery, the logo on the upper half, and the caliber reference and depth rating on the lower half. Overall, the C-shaped case and Explorer-style dial work really well together. They give the Héron Continental a nice retro charm. Thanks to the colorful touches, though, it also has a certain modern relevance.

The Miyota 9039

If you turn the watch around, you’ll see the Miyota 9039 caliber. This automatic movement operates at 28,800 vph, has 24 jewels, and offers a 42-hour power reserve. The caliber has a standard accuracy of -10/+30 seconds per day and features a custom rotor. It also features the brand’s logo and a nice snowflake pattern that hints at the Continental’s adventurous character. This rotor adds a nice touch to a fairly straightforward caliber that is the perfect workhorse for this kind of watch.

I own multiple watches with the same movement, and I am always pleasantly surprised by how reliable they are. Every one of them has also consistently shown significantly greater accuracy than officially specified.

Completing the Héron Continental is a 20mm beads-of-rice-style bracelet. It features screw-fastened links, quick-release spring bars, and a toolless micro-adjustment system that makes it easy to size the watch perfectly. The bracelet feels well made, and as the beads-of-rice design suggests, it is flexible and super comfortable on the wrist while providing a ton of character.

I immediately loved the bracelet choice. It gives the Héron Continental an overall vibe that I recognize from the 1960s vintage Seiko watches I adore. Easier choices would have been an Oyster-style or flat-link bracelet, but I love that Héron chose a different bracelet to suit a slightly different aesthetic.

Wearing the Héron Continental

And as you would expect, the bracelet also made the watch very fun to wear. It wrapped itself gently around my wrist, and after closing the substantial clasp with a reassuring click, I was good to go. The Continental pleasantly surprised me in more ways than one. First, while the overall style and elements are not revolutionary, the watch has fresh appeal that immediately won me over. The combination of cream and orange works really well and keeps the design from becoming a bit boring. Plus, a sandwich dial is always a win in my book. Of the three available models, this is definitely my favorite. That’s easy to say, of course, because this is the only version we had in for review. But I like the overall style of the cream dial more than the black and blue ones.

Another thing that immediately stood out was how well-proportioned the watch is. With its 37mm diameter and 8.5mm thickness, excluding the crystal, the Continental has a fairly slim overall profile. The crystal adds to the overall dimensions, but it doesn’t feel like you are wearing an 11mm-thick watch, which isn’t that massive anyway. The modest 43mm lug-to-lug helps maintain the great proportions, which will be perfect for a variety of wrist sizes. Furthermore, the beads-of-rice bracelet adds to its visual presence, making it a perfect daily watch, even for big guys like me.

Final thoughts on the new Héron Continental

Honestly, I was quite surprised by how much I liked the Héron Continental. In the constant stream of new releases that land on my desk, one glance deceived me into thinking that the Continental was something I had seen before. But that certainly was too quick a judgment. Once I put the watch on my wrist, I quickly became rather smitten with the look and all the little details, like the orange luminous dots and the combination of the Old Radium Super-LumiNova base layer and the cream-colored top. Another clever touch is that the color of the printing on the dial is the same color as the luminous base, keeping the aesthetic soft and warm. Most brands would have chosen black printing, but I love that Héron decided to go a different route.

All in all, this Héron Continental was one of the nicest releases I have come across recently. A big part of that was due to the surprise factor. As I said, I was a bit biased at first glance, but the Héron proved my preconceptions wrong. On top of that, the watch just wears like a dream. The proportions are perfect, and the build quality is great. As a result, this new Héron Continental series offers a trio of great, versatile watches at an affordable price of US$630 each. What you get for the money is a great vintage-inspired daily wearer that will undoubtedly win enthusiasts over. If you like this style of watch, I definitely would suggest that you check it out.

One of the nicest surprises…

After wearing the cream-dial version multiple times over a few days, I can say I’ve become a fan. I generally gravitate towards darker dials, preferably black. But this combination of cream, orange, and Old Radium Super-LumiNova just works for me. It sparked the idea of whether I should get one of these. Honestly, I don’t find myself wearing light-dial watches a lot, but this is one of those very nice exceptions. Just when I thought I knew what my next few watch purchases would be, the Héron Continental has me reconsidering my options. I hate you, Héron, for doing such a great job with the new Continental…
