Vacheron Constantin’s Les Cabinotiers workshop is its skunkworks division devoted to the most exclusive single-piece editions. Each watch is a special commission by connoisseurs seeking one-of-a-kind timepieces to express their unique artistic vision. Les Cabinotiers dates to the 18th century, when master watchmakers, known as cabinotiers, worked in the brighter top floors of Genevan workshops. These watchmakers dedicated time to refining and developing complex creations for bespoke orders. Today, the practice continues with Vacheron Constantin’s 2026 pièce unique, which combines a tourbillon regulator with a minute repeater. Adding to this complexity is the craft of skeletonization, which showcases the mechanics on display in a 45mm 18K pink gold case. There’s a lot to unpack with this release, so let’s get into it.

Vacheron Constantin is the oldest watchmaker still in operation today. Yet, its first foray into gentlemen’s wristwatches was not until 1912. Vacheron used a tonneau case to break with tradition and differentiate itself from the typical round pocket watch. Cynically, the tonneau case also proves that the wristwatch was not simply a small pocket watch with lugs soldered on. Later, in 1943, Vacheron Constantin presented reference 4261, its first serially produced wristwatch with a minute repeater. Housing a 3.28mm-thin movement, this reference remained in production into the 1950s. Minute repeaters provide an audible indication of the time when the wearer actuates a slide piece on the side of the case. Tiny hammers then strike two harmonic gongs, producing a crystal-clear sound indicating the time in hours, quarters, and minutes, in that order. Today’s reference 6580C/000R-343C goes further by combining a tourbillon carriage for the regulation.

Last year’s Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication remains the most complex wristwatch ever, boasting 41 complications. Reflecting Vacheron Constantin’s 270th anniversary, the brand went all out in highlighting its watchmaking might. VC presented not only that incredible watch but also the La Quête Du Temps automaton clock purely as a demonstration of its abilities. Compared to last year, the 2026 Les Cabinotiers Minute Repeater Tourbillon Skeleton scales it back somewhat. However, this new pièce unique is no less grand, with plenty of heritage. Alongside the minute repeater is the tourbillon regulator at 6 o’clock. A tourbillon rotates the balance spring within a carriage to counteract any rate deviation caused by Earth’s gravitational pull.

The first mention of a tourbillon device in a Vacheron Constantin pocket watch was in 1901. This is 100 years after Abraham-Louis Breguet filed a patent on April 14th, 1801. Therefore, the tourbillon is officially 225 years old to the day. However, it was in 1992 that Vacheron incorporated a tourbillon into a wristwatch with reference 30050. Combining a tourbillon with a minute repeater came after. The first of its kind debuted in 2005 in the Vacheron Constantin Tour de l’Île. However, this was a highly complex double-sided timepiece with 16 complications. A purer execution of a minute repeater and a tourbillon came with 2016’s Traditionnelle Tourbillon Minute Repeater. This watch marked the debut of caliber 2755 TMR, which powers the new 2026 Les Cabinotiers pièce unique. Ten years on, the caliber is still going strong and now features wonderful skeletonization.

Exquisite manual finishing

Skeletonization is a delicate art form at Vacheron Constantin. Highly skilled watchmakers gradually expose the movement by removing material from components while maintaining structural integrity. It takes two years to train as a chamferer at Vacheron Constantin, applying a mirror polish to components. Chamfering aims to soften the inner and external angles with 45° bevels using various brushing tools. In this Les Cabinotiers Minute Repeater Tourbillon Skeleton, there are nine stages of finishing. Starting with an abrasive stone, any cutting remnants are worn away. Following this are wooden buffing sticks with various fabrics that smooth the material. The final stage takes at least 10 hours of manual finishing with fine paste to achieve that superb mirror polish. Decorating the watches at this level is what earns the Les Cabinotiers its Poinçon de Genève, or Geneva Seal.

The tourbillon receives even more dedication. The carriage alone takes four to five days of finishing to achieve that Maltese Cross motif. Rounding off the flourish is the narrow bar that holds the tourbillon in place at the open aperture at 6 o’clock. The bar features a semicylindrical and conical shape. With split-finishing techniques, it’s a meticulous, dextrous motion to ensure the wrong finish doesn’t bleed onto the adjacent section of the tiny component. Rounding off a single tourbillon bar requires more than 12 hours of work, entirely by hand. This is the ultimate polishing technique and must be completed by hand for absolute quality. All this effort, including the design and mapping of the skeletonization, took one year of development. The caliber also receives a new reference, 2755 TMR SQ, in which “SQ” stands for squelette, meaning “skeleton.”

Functional elegance

The visual treat of the timepiece is the visible movement, with a 40% reduction in its original volume. A sapphire dial allows an unobstructed view of this caliber 2755 TMR SQ. However, Vacheron Constantin also paid attention to the indications. A gold satin-finished ring with a deep blue tone surrounds the tourbillon, with 60 increments for the seconds. Similarly, a circular satin-finish blue horseshoe-shaped minute indicator is interrupted by the tourbillon window. Further to this, a fluted ring holds 11 applied 18K gold baton hour markers. Turning the watch continues the sublime artistry with predominantly sandblasted bridges. Blasting aluminum oxide at high pressure creates this matte texture with straight graining on the top surfaces. These light-absorbing components contrast wonderfully against the mirror-polished striking hammers and tourbillon bar, highlighting their presence.

Also on the case back is the power reserve indicator, counting down from 58 hours. This is especially useful because minute repeaters require increased power when activated. Vacheron also emphasizes sound quality. In 2007, the brand developed the silent strike regulator for the minute repeater function. With this device, the mechanism’s noise no longer interferes with the chimed notes. As a result, you don’t get that buzzing noise that often accompanies the activation of a minute repeater. That way, the tuneful tones sound out without a background whirring noise. Still, the caliber retains a thin 6.3mm profile, comprising about half of the 18K pink gold case’s total 12mm thickness. Topping it all off is the blue calfskin strap with a sailcloth-like texture and 18K pink gold folding clasp.
