Where a number of brands have huge difficulties delivering their novelties before (or in the) summer, IWC announces a special summer edition of their Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph. For this occasion, the IWC Portugieser Yacht Club reference IW390507 has been fitted with a stunning sun burst blue dial with white subdials as well as a beautiful blue rubber strap.

As always, the IWC Yacht Club comes with their in-house calibre 89361 movement. This chronograph movement has a flyback function and the chronograph hour and minute subdials are located at 12 o’clock. The running seconds can also be found at 6 o’clock. The large red chronograph second hand gives a nice contrast with the blue dial and the white outer dial that has a tachymeter scale. This movement has a power reserve of 68 hours and ticks at 28,800vph. IWC’s calibre 89361 movement can be viewed via the sapphire crystal of the case back. The Côtes de Genève and perlage finish are clearly visible.

Where the IWC Portugieser collection is normally one of their more dressier ones, the Yacht Club is especially meant for those who enjoy the water. So it has to be sportier than the other Portugieser models. The case shape is already a bit more sporty than – let’s say – the Portugieser Chronograph or Automatic, mainly due to the thick bezel and the use of a crown guard. Add a rubber strap and there you go; a perfect summer watch! It is also safe to use near and in the water, with a water resistance of 60 meters (~6 ATM). The crown is screw-down, the pushers are not as you can see. IWC’s rubber strap has a specific motif on the inside of the rubber strap, so it prevents from moving too much (especially when wet).

The price of this IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Summer Edition ref. IW390507 is the same as the other stainless steel Yacht Club references, €12.300 or $12,100USD. Over the years, IWC decreased the case size a bit on their Yacht Club models that were introduced in 2010, from 45.4mm to a more wearable size of 43.5mm. Perfect size for most men and with the rubber strap a very comfortable fit. The height of the watch is 14.5mm. A nicely brushed finish IWC buckle is used for the blue rubber strap.
