Murphy Cooper’s Choice: The Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm With A New Blue Dial
I bet that, if given a choice, Murphy Cooper would wear a different watch. In Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014), “Murph” wears a black-dial watch with vintage elements, like cathedral hands, and probably a 42mm case. This gift from her father is pretty similar to the 2019 commercial release. A 38mm watch would fit her wrist way better, though, and the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm with the new blue dial would also look better with her Carhartt Michigan chore jacket and the denim shirt underneath. Not that she pays that much attention to her outfit, but surely a brilliant NASA physicist would subconsciously choose a gradient blue-to-black dial over an all-black one. Why? Because the new cosmic-blue dial looks a bit mysterious. It’s just like how using quantum data from inside a black hole to unlock the secret to harnessing gravity is a mystery to anyone but Murph.
I doubt Murph would choose the white-dial 38mm version that came out in 2024. That is a pretty neat watch, but the crisp white dial paired with a black leather strap embossed with a crocodile pattern is a bit too chic. Murph would want a bracelet — a sturdy, solid, no-nonsense one. And the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm with the new blue dial comes with this. It’s a brushed three-link stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp that gets the job done, just like a Carhartt Michigan chore jacket.

Apart from the grainy, gradient blue dial, there’s nothing new about the latest iteration of the Khaki Field Murph 38mm. You’ve also seen the Arabic numerals and cathedral hands with beige Super-LumiNova before. Hamilton created a successful watch, and now the brand occasionally launches a different dial color. The 38mm Khaki Field Murph is a Fratello favorite. The 42mm original wears very large due to its 52mm lug-to-lug. The 38mm version has a much more manageable 44.7mm length and an 11.1mm profile. A 20mm lug spacing helps to create a strong wrist presence. That, along with the aviation-inspired aesthetics, gives the small Murph a big tool-watch aura.
Still, nowadays, a mechanical tool watch is a luxury, even if the Khaki Field Murph 38mm is reasonably priced. On a three-row steel bracelet, the watch retails for €1,075 / US$1,045 / CHF 945, and on the black leather strap with crocodile print, it costs €995 / US$995 / CHF 870. Whatever version you pick, it’s meant to feel luxurious.
That shows in details like the curvy lugs that give the watch a slightly classical presence and the polished bezel, which contrasts nicely with the brushed case beneath. Another touch of luxury is the AR-coated sapphire crystal. It’s the little things that do a lot.
Time only, and that’s enough
Befitting a tool watch is the H-10 automatic caliber. Behind the (luxurious) sapphire-equipped display case back, this evolution of the ETA 2824-2 beats, providing an upgraded 80-hour power reserve. While the finishing is rudimentary, it does feature a customized Hamilton rotor for added visual appeal.
User reports indicate that the H-10 is a fairly accurate movement. Most reviewers report accuracy within ±5 seconds per day. The time-only movement is controlled via the oversized push-pull crown at 3 o’clock. And even though it is not a screw-down crown, water resistance is rated at a very reasonable 100 meters.
Discreetly charismatic
On the solid, adequately finished bracelet, the Khaki Field Murph 38mm is basically a put-on-and-forget kind of watch. But the blue dial has a way of keeping your attention much more than the original black version. Purists might consider a gradient dial in a tool watch a sin, but it does have intriguing visual qualities. The gradual color change and the textured surface, together with the ornamental cathedral hands, are discreetly charismatic.
I was pleasantly surprised by the newest, modestly charming Murph and enjoyed the blue dial paired with denim. Yes, I am much more aware of what I’m wearing than Murph Cooper. I would even swap the bracelet for a tan leather strap from time to time to match the Carhartt jacket I own. The black leather strap with contrast stitching isn’t my vibe at all, though. If you ask me, faux croco has no place on a watch like this, and the strap’s stiffness didn’t help change my opinion.
