Sinn commemorates 65 years in business with the 140 A S Anniversary, a chronograph inspired by the brand’s spaceflight history. Limited to 300 pieces, the watch continues a model line that demonstrated the reliability of a mechanical automatic chronograph in zero gravity. The story goes back to 1985, when physicist and astronaut Reinhard Furrer wore a Sinn 140 S during the Spacelab D1 mission. Equipped with a Lemania 5100 movement, the watch operated under actual spaceflight conditions. The new 140 A S Anniversary builds on that legacy with Sinn’s SZ01 chronograph movement and several of the brand’s technical case technologies.

We had a chance to see and spend some time with the watch at the WatchTime fair in Düsseldorf last week. Here, the watch was being presented as one of the show’s highlights.

A chronograph built for readability

At the heart of the 140 A S Anniversary is the Sinn SZ01 chronograph movement. This proprietary development features a central 60-minute stopwatch hand with a jumping minute indication. This allows the wearer to read elapsed minutes directly from the main dial, making it easier to track intervals at a glance.

A rotatable minute scale runs around the full diameter of the dial. This serves two purposes. First, it can be used in conjunction with the chronograph hands, but the wearer can also adjust it with the 10-o’clock crown to use it as a timing bezel with the main minute hand. The two central chronograph hands and the elapsed-hour hand in the 6-o’clock sub-dial each feature a fresh coat of yellow for improved legibility. The main hour and minute hands feature a healthy dose of lume, as do the hour markers and the internal bezel’s trapezoidal “pip.”

The anniversary edition continues the technical development of Sinn’s original space chronograph. Its movement architecture differs from that of the Lemania 5100-equipped watch Furrer wore. Sinn also opted for a commemorative engraving of the Spacelab D1 mission insignia on the case back.

All the Sinn fixings

The 140 A S Anniversary’s 44 × 15.5mm case features a mix of satin-finished and polished surfaces. Sinn uses its Tegiment Technology and a black DLC coating to enhance the case’s scratch resistance. Both treatments harden the surface, helping the watch retain its finish during everyday wear.

Speaking of that, given its dimensions, some of you may question its wearability. But when trying it on at WatchTime Düsseldorf last week, I was surprised by how well it wears. It’s relatively heavy, especially in its all-steel configuration. But given its relatively short 46mm lug-to-lug span, it sits well on the wrist.

The crown and pushers incorporate Sinn’s D3-System. This construction helps prevent dust and water ingress by fitting the operating elements directly into the case. Ar-Dehumidifying Technology also helps maintain reliability by reducing moisture inside the watch and minimizing the risk of crystal fogging.

The 140 A S is water- and pressure-resistant to 10 bar. It is also designed to withstand low-pressure conditions. This feature makes sense given its aviation and spaceflight connections. Is it truly necessary? Perhaps not, but trust Sinn to overengineer a watch just for the sake of it.

Initial impressions

The 140 A S Anniversary connects Sinn’s spaceflight history with its most recent engineering developments. Its central 60-minute chronograph hand prioritizes instant legibility, while the hardened case and moisture-management system meet modern specifications. The combination gives this anniversary model a clear functional focus. Its yellow accents differ from the red accents of previous models, providing a distinctive look.

The limited production run of 300 pieces also makes this watch a fairly exclusive addition to the 140 series. Sinn celebrates its 65th anniversary in true Sinn fashion — with a new take on a classic model with a documented role in spaceflight, updated with the brand’s SZ01 movement and proprietary case technologies. The Sinn 140 A S Anniversary retails for €5,490 with both the bracelet and leather strap.
