Under normal circumstances, today would be press day at Baselworld 2020. We would be preparing to spread ourselves throughout the fair, visiting brands, and learning about their novelties for 2020. One of them, for sure, would be Sinn. To mark what would have been the opening salvo of Baselworld, let’s dive into the Sinn novelties for 2020.

It is certainly a shame we have not had the chance to try these pieces on our wrists yet. Rest assured. That day will come. And with it, so will a more personal touch to our opinions. For now, Close your eyes and imagine that nothing has changed. Here are Sinn’s 2020 novelties which were originally planned for Baselworld. You may open your eyes again now. Sinn is, to me, a brand focused on evolution rather than revolution. And this year is no different. We see a total of 8 new watches, in 3 model lines.

Sinn U-series, aka the diving watch made of German Submarine Steel

Let me start with the brand’s popular diving watches. The U-family —  U1, U2, U212, and UX — will be expanded with a U50 in 3 variations, U50, U50.S, and the U50.SDR. U-series watches were available in two sizes, 44 (U1, U2, and UX) and 47mm (U212) . Sinn thought now was the time for a slightly smaller model. Consequently, the U50 measures 41 mm.

Specifically, with its cylindrical shape emphasizing the diameter, this will be good news for people with smaller wrists. Just like the U1, U2, and UX, the U50 comes executed in blank steel (U50), blank steel with a black divers bezel (U50.SDR), and totally in black (U50.S).

Not surprisingly the new U50 models are — DNV GL, Det Norske Veritas/Germanische Lloyd, certified — pressure tested to 50 bar, equalling 500-meter depth. The prices of these new models can be obtained from the Sinn website.

Sinn 556, the elegantly sporty watch

This year, the 556.A and 556.I are the latest products to evolve. The 556.A RS and 556.I RS are slight updates to these stalwarts for 2020. Guess what? RS, in this case, does not stand for Renn Sport, but for Red Secondhand. And that’s exactly what’s new about these two watches, they sport a red secondhand.

The basics of this new 556 offspring remained the same. A brushed stainless steel case of 38.5 mm, waterproof to 200 meters, housing an automatic movement. Sapphire glass on the front and for the display back. Often, Sinn uses the color red to have things “optisch zurückgenommen” (I love that phrase; for the non-German readers, it means “optically withdrawn”). Here the red second hand is meant to be “in harmonious contrast to the black of the dial and the white of the numbers and indices”. In my opinion, the brand succeeded. For prices, again, head over to the Sinn website.

Perfect Elegance, 1739 primus inter pares

Primus inter pares. First among equals. Sinn couldn’t have described the new 1739 any better. Exactly in between the 36 mm Sinn 1736 and the 42 mm 1746, we finally have a model measuring 39mm — the new Sinn 1739.

The new 1739 is offered with three different dials. Firstly, the 1739 St.I.S which is entirely new. Secondly, the 1739 St.I.4N, with gold accents found in the smaller Sinn 1736 as well. And lastly, the 1739 Heimat dial, which was used previously in the larger 1746.

Sinn 1739 Heimat

Heimat, by the way, means Homeland in German. Here Sinn uses this description as an homage to the city in which were born. The fine rhodium-coated relief dial is inspired by the traditional diamond pattern of Frankfurt’s popular cider glasses.

All three 1739 models have polished stainless steel – 100-meter water-resistant, and resistant to low pressure – casing, sporting a sapphire crystal and case back. Prices available from the Sinn website.

Sellita movements

All of the above-mentioned novelties are fitted with Sellita automatic movements. The 556 with a 26-jewel SW200-1 caliber, and the U50, and 1739 with a 25-jewel SW300-1. Sinn, however, informs us that the movements and specifications are liable to change. Should you have individual questions regarding your watch, Sinn will be happy to advise you personally.
