Introducing: The Awe-Inspiring Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition
The Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition introduces a fully reworked take on the brand’s most complex watch to date. The Biel-based manufacture combines its patented resonance system with an entirely new striking mechanism. The result feels more intricate and compact, and it even has a party trick up its sleeve!
This release matters because it builds on two pillars that define Armin Strom today. The brand made its name through visible mechanics and its Mirrored Force Resonance system, which debuted in 2016. Bringing a minute repeater into that equation has always been technically difficult. The previous attempt, however, already proved it could be done, and this new watch pushes the concept further. Join me for a closer look at this complicated beast.
The Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition in context
The Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition builds on the Mirrored Force Resonance concept, which remains central to the brand’s identity. The system connects two independent balances via a thin resonance clutch spring. Each balance moves independently but settles into resonance oscillation. That shared rhythm stabilizes the accuracy of both. The physical connection between the two makes the system more resilient than traditional resonance approaches, which can lose synchronization after small shocks.
The earlier Minute Repeater Resonance in the Masterpiece line showed that a striking mechanism and resonance could coexist. That watch used two hammers and two gongs inside a 47.7mm titanium case. It also required a separate barrel for the repeater. With the new Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition, Armin Strom reduces the case’s footprint significantly while increasing complexity. Moving from two to four hammers and gongs introduces a full Westminster chiming sequence with four distinct tones.
A new function defines this watch. Alongside the standard repeater mode, which strikes the current time, the wearer can select a second mode via a column wheel. This activates the longest sequence the mechanism can deliver — 12 hours, three quarters, and 14 minutes. Armin Strom calls this the 12:59 Anytime mode. A small indicator switches between white and red to show the active mode, and the slider at 9 o’clock winds and triggers the striking mechanism. Is it practical? Maybe not. Is it a fantastic way to draw eyes and ears at any party? For sure!
The Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition specs
The Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition features a titanium case with a 42mm diameter, an 11.7mm thickness, a 48mm lug-to-lug, and a 5atm water resistance rating. Sapphire crystals sit on the front and back, both bearing an antireflective treatment. An anthracite titanium dial ring with a white railroad minute track frames the openworked display. The watch comes on a gray alligator strap with matching stitching, quick-release spring bars, and a titanium buckle.
Inside ticks the in-house manual-winding ARR25 movement. This 34.4 × 6.53mm caliber consists of 506 components, including 74 jewels, beats at 3.5 Hz, and offers a 40-hour power reserve. Its two independent regulating systems each have a separate barrel, gear train, escapement, and balance. As described above, the patented resonance clutch spring connects them. The repeater adds four hammers and four gongs controlled by a column-wheel system. A flying governor, visible on the dial side, regulates the tempo of the chimes.
Finishing is split across both sides. On the dial side, polished and matte surfaces create contrast. The hammers, gongs, and resonance spring are mirror-polished, while the mainplate and bridges appear matte. The flying governor features hand-filed edges and engraved details. On the reverse, Geneva stripes, straight graining, and circular textures dominate. Every component receives full hand-finishing by Armin Strom’s in-house team. The watch is limited to 25 pieces and priced at CHF 390,000.
Some words on the design
You may have gathered from my earlier articles that I am a massive admirer of Armin Strom’s design language. The house nails that golden combination of being instantly recognizable and unique while still staying true to traditional watchmaking standards. Few brands can pull this off, and Armin Strom is among them.
This latest effort only serves to cement that elevated position. I absolutely love the combination of modernity in titanium and the open-worked, industrial aesthetic, and the classical appearance of traditional hand-finishing. Speaking of contrasts, the cool, dark titanium and the rose gold movement plates offer another delicious serving of it.
The openworked dials are another key ingredient of Armin Strom creations, and the Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition shows why it works. It feels as if the entire movement was designed from day one to be seen. Whereas similar watches often feel stripped, this feels natural. A dial would ruin it.
Closing thoughts on the Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition
Armin Strom continues to release deeply impressive watches as a true independent watchmaker. We can consider ourselves lucky to have a handful of these unicorns around in our time. Even if this far exceeds your budget (or even ambitions), it is hard to deny that it carries significance. We need a few pioneers pushing the boundaries of watchmaking, material science, design, and execution.
The Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition exudes watchmaking joy. After all, who would ever set out to make a 12:59-chiming watch if they didn’t love what they do? It is a useless feature that, no doubt, costs a jaw-dropping amount of time to develop. “Because we can” isn’t very often a good excuse to do something. Here, though, I can get into it!
