Introducing: The Fears Brunswick 40 Helmsman Endurance Specification
Fears brings more sportiness to its catalog with the sophomore release in the Endurance Specification (ES) series. The new Brunswick 40 Helmsman uses a 316L stainless steel cushion case with heavily brushed surfaces. This approach builds on last year’s Redcliff 39.5mm ES model. That watch featured a hardened, frosted case with black DLC-coated components. This time, Fears takes a different visual route. The Brunswick case remains the brand’s most recognizable silhouette. Here, Fears applies a similar finish to that familiar shape. The result feels more in line with a typical Fears watch. Dubbed the Helmsman, this model draws inspiration from yachting. Its matte case reduces glare on open water under strong sunlight. It also gives the watch a more purposeful, tool-oriented feel.
Yachting is close to my heart. As a certified skipper, I enjoy charting routes through scenic coastlines, and island hopping and quiet anchorages define my ideal holiday. While I have participated in regatta-style racing, I prefer recreational sailing. Fears clearly understands that mindset. Rather than adding a regatta countdown timer, the Brunswick 40 Helmsman keeps things simple. It focuses on clarity and reliability as a time-only watch.
While it follows the Redcliff 39.5 ES, the Helmsman feels closer to last year’s Odyssey Edition. That watch, created with Angus Collins, featured a bright white textured dial. Its layout proved popular, and the limited run of 100 pieces sold out quickly. The Helmsman revisits that idea in a non-limited format.

The story ties back to the Fears Experimental 01. That prototype supported Angus Collins during his solo row around the British Isles. Although the journey ended early due to the weather, the watch proved its durability. The Experimental 01, however, was never intended as a publicly available release.
The Odyssey Edition followed with refined tweaks, a 100-piece limitation, and polished elements on the lugs and bezel to distinguish it from the prototype. However, that choice of finishing softened its tool-watch character. The Helmsman strikes a better balance. It draws on design cues from the Experimental 01 and applies them to the Brunswick 40 platform. The bezel, lugs, case sides, and crown all feature a brushed finish. This treatment reinforces the watch’s rugged nature. The sapphire crystal features an antireflective coating on both sides, further reducing glare in bright conditions.
A marine-blue chapter ring adds contrast around the dial. At the same time, white printing on it keeps the look crisp and legible. The result feels clean, functional, and nautical. On the matte white dial, we find a subtle sector groove that adds depth, with the blue chapter ring framing everything nicely. Two luminous pipette-style hands indicate the hours and minutes, using Grade A BGW9 Super-LumiNova for visibility in low light. The PVD-coated blue seconds hand ties into the color theme. This one, however, does not include lum, meaning it lacks the same nighttime glow.
Applied numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 enter Rolex Explorer territory, with baton markers filling the gaps between them. Overall, the dial feels balanced and easy to read. That’s on the surface, but the watch also improves its capability. The water resistance has increased to 200 meters, up from 150 meters on the Odyssey Edition. A sapphire-equipped case back reveals the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement. It offers a 68-hour power reserve and features a decorated blue “Bristol Flower” rotor. The 11.9mm case profile indicates a 0.84mm increase, but that change feels negligible in practice. With a 46.5mm lug-to-lug, the watch remains very wearable.
Final specs and pricing
Fears fits the Helmsman with a textured FKM rubber strap. This white 20mm accessory includes blue contrast stitching and a black FKM lining. It feels durable, comfortable, and perfectly suited to warm conditions. An all-brushed pin buckle completes the setup, and quick-release spring bars make strap changes easy. Blue keepers add a subtle design touch, too.
