Channeling Autumn: The Newest Oris × Cervo Volante Big Crown Pointer Date

Oris and Cervo Volante, a Swiss producer of high-quality leather goods, have released several collaborations in the past few years. For their latest one, the two brands created a 40mm Oris Big Crown Pointer Date with a beautiful burgundy gradient dial and a dark brown Cervo Volante strap made from sustainable deer leather. The watch also comes with a special travel pouch made of the same leather in a lighter color. Indeed, this release continues the series of collaborative efforts in style.

The first collaborations between Oris and Cervo Volante were a trio of 38mm Big Crown Pointer Date models released in 2022. Then, last year, a 40mm model followed, which Daan reviewed. It brought back the classic Sellita-powered Big Crown Pointer Date after Oris introduced updated, modern versions with smooth bezels and proprietary calibers. Seeing a classic BCPD with a beautiful Indian-summer-style dial proved once more why we love the watch’s signature look, with its knurled bezel. As most of you know, in 2020, we proudly worked with Oris on a limited-edition Big Crown Pointer Date with an oxblood-red dial. Understandably, the new release immediately piqued my interest.

The details of the new Oris × Cervo Volante Big Crown Pointer Date

Oris and Cervo Volante continue their autumn-inspired collaborative efforts with this new release. The dial color reflects the hues of the red foliage in the Waldenburg Valley near the Oris factory in Hölstein. It is paired with a dark brown strap made of deer leather. Cervo Volante creates leather footwear and accessories using sustainable deer leather sourced from the Swiss mountains. The brand gets deer skins from Swiss authorities that carefully manage the country’s deer population. Rather than letting these skins go to waste, Cervo Volante upcycles them into sustainable products.

The combination of elements has led to a stylish watch that follows the familiar Big Crown Pointer Date recipe. The watch has a 40mm stainless steel case with a 48mm lug-to-lug and 12.2mm thickness, including the signature knurled bezel and double-domed sapphire crystal. Inside sits the burgundy gradient dial with Super-LumiNova hour markers and white Arabic numerals and printing. Hovering over that are the usual cathedral hands for the hours and minutes. A sharp seconds hand and a pointer-date hand with a red tip accompany those. Overall, it’s a familiar look, just executed slightly differently from previous Big Crown Pointer Date models.

The Sellita-based Oris 754

If you turn the watch around, you’ll see the Oris 754 caliber. This 26-jewel automatic movement operates at 28,800 vph and offers a 41-hour power reserve. Based on the Sellita SW200-1, the 754 features the custom red rotor that has become a signature Oris detail. Oris enthusiasts love the Big Crown Pointer Date with the Sellita-based movement because it keeps the price down. It’s also easy to service, making it very practical. Operating the caliber is easy, too, thanks to the oversized screw-down crown, which also helps keep the watch water-resistant to 50 meters.

Completing the watch is the aforementioned dark brown 20mm Cervo Volante leather strap. It features quick-release spring bars, two white stitches on each piece, and a stainless steel pin buckle. On the strap’s underside, you will find the Cervo Volante scarab logo on one piece and the brand name on the other. It’s a great reminder of the collaborative series that Oris and Cervo Volante have created.

Final thoughts on the new Oris × Cervo Volante Big Crown Pointer Date

Overall, this new Oris × Cervo Volante Big Crown Pointer Date looks great. The autumn-inspired look suits the watch really well. Compared to last year’s edition, its presence is a little darker and gloomier, but I love that. This is not the first time we have seen a dark red dial in the Big Crown Pointer Date. In addition to the bronze Fratello limited edition, Oris created a stainless steel version with the same oxblood dial. This color works incredibly well with the watch’s classic look.

It also makes this new burgundy-gradient-dial version a welcome addition to the lineup. While I prefer a solid color over a gradient dial, there is no denying this new release has plenty of charm. On top of that, each watch is delivered with a travel pouch made of Cervo Volante’s sustainable deer leather. It makes it easier to take the watch traveling with you if you’re wearing a different one. Then again, I think this is a great timepiece that many Oris enthusiasts will love to wear daily.
