Sternglas Celebrates 10 Years With The Colorful Naos Automatik Edition Bauhaus X
Sternglas has built an extensive collection of colorful watches based on the minimalist Bauhaus philosophy. But if you ask me what the true representation of that style is, it’s undoubtedly the brand’s Naos line. The Naos is Sternglas’s most popular model and the true representation of the Bauhaus principles translated into a watch. To celebrate the iconic style, Sternglas introduces the new Naos Automatik Edition Bauhaus X series. The three watches celebrate the iconic design style but also have a nice surprise up their sleeves. I had a chance to take the trio for a spin to find out more.
I’ve reviewed quite a few Sternglas watches over the years, and the Hamburg series is probably my favorite. The Naos, however, most truly represents the spirit of the brand’s collection. If you ask me, it embodies the classic Bauhaus style perfectly. Now, in its 10th year of existence, Sternglas decided to pay homage to two core principles of the Bauhaus movement — color as functional design and light as a shaping element. The Bauhaus X reimagines the classic Naos by adding colorful details and a full-lume dial. It results in an interesting take on the standard Naos Automatik, produced in a limited run of 500 pieces per colorway.
The details of the Sternglas Naos Automatik Edition Bauhaus X series
Let’s go over the details of the three watches. They each have a 38mm stainless steel case with a 13mm profile (including the double-domed crystal) and a 43mm lug-to-lug. The watches are also water resistant to 50 meters and come fitted with a 20mm leather strap. Inside the polished case lies an off-white dial fully coated with Super-LumiNova. As a result, the dial lights up brightly in the dark.
On top of that, each dial features the minute track that we know from the regular Naos Automatik, but the applied black markers in the shapes of circles, squares, and triangles are a nice Bauhaus twist. These shapes are the three primary building blocks for the iconic Bauhaus style and replace the numerals you will find on the regular Naos models.
Hovering over the dial are the familiar black hour and minute hands, here filled with off-white Super-LumiNova. Another Bauhaus touch is the slim seconds hand in blue, red, or yellow, depending on your preference. These are the primary colors used in Bauhaus design.
The integration of the Bauhaus colors
You’ll also find these colors if you turn the watches around. Each one features an individually numbered case back with a tinted transparent display that matches the seconds hand’s color. The blue, red, or yellow crystal adds another nice, colorful touch when you are not wearing the watch.
You can also still get a decent view of the Miyota 8215 caliber inside. This 21-jewel automatic movement operates at 21,600 vph and offers a 42-hour power reserve, official accuracy of -20/+40 seconds per day, and a date complication, visible at 6 o’clock on the dial.
Finishing the watch’s look is a black leather strap with contrasting stitching. As you would expect, the stitching matches the color of the seconds hand and the crystal on the case back. Looking at the three watches, they feature nice links to the famous Bauhaus style without becoming too loud. It’s only when you turn the watches around that you get hit with a proper dose of color.
Wearing the Sternglas Naos Automatik Edition Bauhaus X
I like the colorful twist compared to the regular Naos Automatik. It connects the watches to their design roots, but they also look a bit more “sparkly” than the regular models. Consequently, as soon as you put these Sternglas Naos Automatik Edition Bauhaus X watches on the wrist, they feel different than the standard versions, and that’s exactly what you would expect from a limited edition.
I happen to be a big fan of the Bauhaus movement and have a series of posters in my apartment that celebrate the style. That’s also why I was immediately intrigued by the Naos Automatik Edition Bauhaus X series. They show an immediate connection to the famous style without appearing too on the nose.
That only happens when you turn the watches around. But on the wrist, you see the hints of color that give the watches a nice look. Combined with the elegantly sized case and fun, detailed dial, these watches are a joy to wear. Obviously, I had to get a lume torch out to put the dial to the test. I can confirm that the dials light up brightly, adding greatly to the fun.
Final thoughts on the Sternglas Naos Automatik Edition Bauhaus X
The watches sit nicely on the wrist, though the 12mm case thickness (excluding the crystal) doesn’t make them slim. In all honesty, it didn’t really bother me for the short time we had the watches. They still feel well built and sit comfortably on the wrist.
Additionally, the Miyota 8215 is a proven workhorse caliber, making the Naos Automatik a trusty daily wearer. With these three new limited editions, Sternglas adds a nice, colorful twist that pays homage to the design movement that has shaped the brand’s success over the past decade.
All in all, the Sternglas Naos Automatik Edition Bauhaus X offers fans of the brand a well-designed limited-edition timepiece. Or if you are a fan of the Bauhaus style in general and are considering buying a watch, this is a great option.
