With three special edition releases under their collective belt already, Zenith and Land Rover explore a new direction, dressing the Defy 21 model in an ultra-contemporary color scheme.

It was way back in 2016 that Zenith first announced its partnership with Land Rover. The model that celebrated this collaboration was called the Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Special Edition. It was quickly followed by the brands’ second effort (the Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar), which was little more than a color update to the first. The third watch produced by these two powerhouses, however, was something rather special. The Zenith Defy Classic Range Rover special edition watch made excellent use of the Defy Classic’s already-skeletonized dial design, by tweaking the recognizable pattern to mirror the wheel design of the Range Rover Evoque. Although many may balk at the partnership, and skim past these models in the catalog because of their niche appeal, these models are worth a closer look.

A very cool customer

Following on from the first Zenith Defy Classic Range Rover model, the brands have put their heads together to produce a fourth model in this series. The Zenith Defy 21 Land Rover Special Edition watch is a very cool customer indeed. Just as the latest Land Rover Defender has undergone a significant redesign, so too has the watch released to mark the car’s debut. A stealthy gray colorway dominates proceedings, with tiny flashes of color used sparingly for maximum effect.

An icy aesthetic

Limited to just 250 pieces, the Zenith Defy 21 Land Rover features a 1/100th second chronograph, housed in a micro-blasted titanium case. The first two editions produced by Zenith and Land Rover utilized ceramic and aluminum. The previous, time-only, Defy model employed brushed titanium for a more traditional appearance. The newest member of the Zenith/Land Rover family takes a different tack, resulting in an icy aesthetic that is warm to the touch (thanks to titanium’s conductivity).

Style underpinned by real substance

That blasted exterior gives the watch a rugged, utilitarian appearance, while the clean lines of the case hint at some serious mechanical sophistication beneath the hood. And that’s really what the Land Rover brand of 2020 is all about: Style underpinned by real substance. The Zenith Defy 21 Land Rover edition doesn’t disappoint on that front either, with a clean, legible dial, expressing useful information in all weather conditions thanks to the applied hour markers treated with Super-LumiNova C3.
