Bringing Classic Art To The Wrist With The IFLW × Venezianico Redentore L’Odalisca
We have come to know IFL Watches for its modern hand-painted dials, often inspired by colorful street art. But what if you let the artists at IFLW have a crack at something a bit more classical? We know that Venezianico is a proud Italian brand that celebrates its Venetian roots with every release. If you put the two together, as we see in this official collaboration, you end up with surprising results — especially if the artists at IFLW reinterpret the classic work from the famous Italian painter Hermann David Salomon Corrodi. The result is the IFLW × Venezianico Redentore L’Odalisca that will have people talking for more reasons than one. Let’s find out more!
When I first laid eyes on the IFLW × Venezianico Redentore L’Odalisca, I immediately cracked a smile. The world of horology is no stranger to erotica. Brands like Blancpain and Ulysse Nardin famously created watches featuring erotic artwork or even automatons depicting naughty scenes on the dial. For its newest release, IFL Watches worked on a special dial that reinterprets a famous work from Hermann David Salomon Corrodi. The Italian painter created his art in the second half of the 19th century and was known as a painter of landscapes and orientalist scenes. But with Ladies of the Harem Bathing, he created an oil painting that stood out from his other work.
The story of the IFLW × Venezianico Redentore L’Odalisca
The painting is a famous example of the fetishization of the “exotic” by 19th-century European artists, such as Hermann Corrodi, Jean-Léon Gérôme, and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. The voyeuristic works depict made-up scenes rather than historical realities. For the dial of this new release, the IFLW artists zoomed in on the center part of the Ladies of the Harem Bathing. The original painting portrays ladies bathing in a water garden. The backdrop is a Moorish castle with palm trees, lush green, and deep reflections on the water.
With the dial of the Redentore L’Odalisca, we find a miniature painting focusing on the bathing ladies. It creates a colorful dial that pays tribute to the romantic vision of the European artists of the second half of the 19th century. The canvas for this classic artwork is the Venezianico Redentore. The Venetian brand’s modern dress watch is the perfect horological canvas for this creation.
The details of the IFLW × Venezianico Redentore L’Odalisca
The Redentore L’Odalisca has a 40 × 11mm stainless steel case with a 46.7mm lug-to-lug. Hovering over the hand-painted dial are dauphine hour and minute hands and a razor-sharp seconds hand. They contrast nicely with the evocative dial, so reading the time is never an issue. That said, you could ask whether reading the time is actually what you’ll end up doing every time you peek at the dial…
Inside the case, you will find the Seiko caliber NH35A. This automatic movement operates at 21,600 vph, has 24 jewels, and offers a 41-hour power reserve. On top of that, it features hacking seconds and manual winding. The caliber lies safely hidden behind an all-steel case back. Finishing the look is a soft black Saffiano leather strap with a stainless steel pin buckle.
Final thoughts on the IFLW × Venezianico Redentore L’Odalisca
Overall, this is a fun release and a break from the norm for IFL Watches. I love seeing a dial featuring classic artwork. Not only does it change up the style of the brand’s hand-painted dials, but it also fits the Venezianico Redentore perfectly. As a result, this new IFLW × Venezianico Redentore L’Odalisca is a surprising and welcome release in the series of collaborative efforts between the two brands.
