Grand Seiko Launches Four New References In The Updated Evolution 9 Hi-Beat Collection
Here we are, just a couple of short months after Watches and Wonders 2026, and Grand Seiko is pressing the launch button in a major way. Today, we’ve got live photos of the refreshed Evolution 9 collection, which encompasses five new Spring Drive and four new Hi-Beat models. This is one of the most important lines in the brand’s catalog, so we were excited to go hands-on with each of the updated watches.
The Evolution 9 collection defines what Grand Seiko does so well. They’re not overt sports pieces, and yet, they’re not so dressy that they’re out of place for daily use. No, these watches, if anything, are the heart of the marque’s lineup. As a result, models like the White Birch and its similarly styled siblings with distinct dial colors and textures have become very popular. So it makes sense for Grand Seiko to continue refining these offerings.
What’s new
First, the latest Evolution 9 Collection Hi-Beat models will become available beginning in October 2026. The case designs and even some of the dials are familiar. Material-wise, the watches come in Ever-Brilliant Steel or High-Intensity Titanium. Yet, as we’ll see, not every dial color is available in both materials. In fact, far from it! The cases are also standardized with a 40mm diameter and an 11.7mm thickness.
Otherwise, all four watches come on bracelets with a greater taper toward the clasp than before. Another new detail is that the push-button folding clasps contain tool-free micro-adjustment. The mechanism features three increments with 2mm spacing between each. Finally, each piece has a box-type sapphire crystal with an antireflective coating, a screw-in display case back, a screw-down crown, and a 10-bar water resistance rating. Now, let’s get to the watches!
The updated Evolution 9 Hi-Beat references
For the latest Evolution 9 Hi-Beat watches, Grand Seiko is using the tried-and-true 9SA5 automatic movement. This caliber was introduced in 2020 and brings serious specs to the market. This is a true high-frequency movement beating at 36,000 vph and packing an impressive 80-hour power reserve. Accuracy is also excellent, at a stated rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day. This movement finds its way into four new references.
The black-dial SLGH029 is offered in a 40mm High-Intensity Titanium case with a matching bracelet. This piece features the Black Birch pattern and aptly displays the line’s chamfered, polished hands and diamond-cut applied indexes. Unlike the other three Hi-Beat models, which have black-on-white date wheels, this one has a white-on-black one at 3 o’clock with a polished metal frame.
Naturally, the White Birch is also offered in this collection as reference SLGH031. This 40mm piece is made of Ever-Brilliant Steel and has the blued central seconds hand. When contrasted with the latest Spring Drive counterpart, we can see the difference in dial textures. Perhaps this is because the Hi-Beat is inspired by the forests of Shizukuishi, whereas the U.F.A. is inspired by Shinshu. Regardless, it’s nice to see the separation between the two models.
According to Grand Seiko, the Green Birch SLBGH033 in steel captures the white birch forests in the sunlight. In some lights, this watch is extremely vivid, yet it becomes dark and mysterious at some angles. No matter the view, it’s certainly an eye-catching dial!
The final automatic Evolution 9 model is a brightly colored surprise. The Iwai River in Iwate Prefecture inspires reference SLGH035. This light blue dial is stunning and comes in a hue normally reserved for smaller Grand Seiko watches. It’s perfect here, and while we’ve seen our share of aqua-like watches over the years, I expect this to be very popular.
The dial texture is unlike any other in the collection. The fragmented pieces evoke the rock formations within the surrounding valley. Again, this one is a real looker!
Pricing for the Evolution 9 Collection Hi-Beat automatic models
Unsurprisingly, the titanium SLGH029 carries a premium. In fact, at €11,700, it costs the same as its Spring Drive counterpart. The steel pieces are slightly lower at €10,400. This puts them in an interesting position where each straddles the line between a steel-bezel Rolex Datejust 41 and a white gold fluted version. That’s competitive territory, but it’s nothing new for the highly desirable brand.
Final thoughts and takeaways
These four new Evolution 9 Hi-Beat references embody Grand Seiko at its best. Clean-looking watches with clear, confident designs are combined with drool-inducing dials.
Sure, the designs are familiar, but the wide array of colors and textures along with a better bracelet should make them fare well among those looking for a fantastic do-it-all watch. I have no complaints, but I’d certainly love to see some smaller options for smaller wrists like mine. Perhaps these pieces are just the start.
