Introducing: The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 With A Green Lacquer Ombré Dial
The Datejust was my first Rolex, and I believe it was for many. It’s the perfect one-watch-do-it-all. The modern Rolex Datejust prices could make you think differently, but it was never a cheap watch to begin with. My colleague Gerard often called it “the mother of all modern wristwatches,” and I agree with him. It’s a watch you should at least have tried once, be it a modern edition like this Datejust 41 with a green lacquer ombré dial or simply a vintage 36mm four- or five-digit reference.
This new Rolex Datejust 41 combines an 18K white gold fluted bezel with an Oyster bracelet in stainless steel. And the dial is perhaps the biggest news, looking sharp in green lacquer with an ombré finish.
The facts: Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 ref. 126334-0033
Rolex introduces a new iteration of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41, presented in a white Rolesor configuration that combines Oystersteel with a white gold bezel. The case has a 41mm diameter and 11.6mm thickness, maintaining the familiar proportions of the modern line of larger Datejust models. It features a fluted white gold bezel, a screw-down Twinlock crown, and a water resistance rating of 100 meters.
Green lacquer ombré dial
The most notable update is the dial, finished in green lacquer with an ombré effect. Unlike earlier executions, this version uses a fully lacquered base with a gradient created by applying black lacquer concentrically toward the edges. The dial features applied white gold hour markers and hands, all filled with Chromalight for low-light visibility, along with the signature date display at 3 o’clock with a Cyclops lens.
Caliber 3235
Inside is the in-house caliber 3235, a self-winding movement operating at 4 Hz with a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. It features Rolex’s Chronergy escapement and Parachrom hairspring, and is regulated to a precision of ±2 seconds per day after casing. The movement drives central hours, minutes, seconds hands, as well as the signature instantaneously changing and quick-set date complication.
The watch is fitted with an Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel, featuring three-piece links and an Oysterclasp, including the Easylink extension system for incremental adjustment. As with current production models, it carries Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer certification and a five-year guarantee.
First impressions
The Datejust lacked a bit of sexiness for a long time. A Rolex sports watch was the thing to have. Only in recent years has the Datejust made a proper comeback to popularity. And I am glad about that! While it was not the first wristwatch, the Datejust did pave the way for practically all modern wristwatches as we know them today.
Oyster or Jubilee?
The new green lacquer ombré dial looks amazing, but for some reason, I can’t stop thinking this watch should be on the Jubilee bracelet. However, I am sure that probably at least 50% of the people out there think the Oyster bracelet is the way to go.
Rolex’s 41mm Datejust is easy to handle, but I have a soft spot for the 36mm versions. That said, the 41mm looks good on my 18cm wrist. I can’t wait to try this new Datejust 41 configuration this week.
This Rolex Datejust 41 ref. 126334-0033 with green lacquer ombré dial has a retail price of €11,450 / US$11,650 / CHF 10,450.
