Rob and I talk about the big news from Rolex, Tudor, and Patek Philippe that was announced on the first day of Watches & Wonders.

We discuss the new Rolex Explorer, Explorer II, Daytonas, and new Datejust dials in detail in this podcast. The responses were all over the place yesterday, and so are ours. A bit different for Tudor, with some proper new releases in silver and gold. And its new Black Bay Chronograph, of course. We have these watches in the Fratello offices for a closer look and will be publishing a hands-on review soon. Last but not least, we talk about the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 in steel, with a green dial. Will this really be the last Nautilus in steel, or will they keep it for precious metals only?

This is a good listen. Without wanting to sound weird, I love the sound of RJs voice!

Rob is a great foil and you two guys work really well together in this format.

Content is great and genuine opinions rather than what the Big Brands want you to say is what sets this apart from some of the other channels.

Can’t wait for more – very much looking forward to hearing what the team have to say about the Breitling novelties 👍

Really value the way you guys manage to be honest, and critical if there’s something about a watch that you don’t like, while still being respectful and professional. Some other watch podcasts seem to think you can never be critical of any watch, and that makes them less credible. So please don’t change that!

One thing surprised me though, which is that neither of you seemed to be aware that Thierry Stern is on record making it very clear why they don’t just increase the production numbers of the Nautilus: he doesn’t want the watch to define Patek. Hodinkee covered this a year or two ago, I can’t remember exactly when, but it was very clearly stated.

  We are aware of that conversation. But, he (Stern) was a bit more outspoken when he talked to a German journalist. It was not only about increasing numbers but about the discontinuation of the steel Naut entirely. So that’s why we were so surprised that they came up with a new steel model (limited production indeed).

    I was talking about the part of the conversation where Rob was saying that he couldn’t understand why they couldn’t our wouldn’t increase production of the Nautilus. I was listening to him speculating about why it might be that they don’t/didn’t increase production, and I’m thinking “But Rob, Stern has SAID why he’s not increasing production so why are you speculating?”. So, basically, a separate issue from discontinuing. It was just a bit strange.
    
    Anyway, nbd and once again, you guys are always worth a listen. Keep it coming!

      Hi Paul. You’re totally right about what he’s said more than once about not letting the steel collection dominate or define the brand, but I was responding to the more recent comments (that RJ mentioned) that Patek is feeling “uncomfortable” with its role in the hype itself. So we’re really talking about two issues: one, if Patek is really having a “moral quandary” it could find a way to increase production, and two, if that’s all nonsense and Stern is phasing out the steel Nautilus because he doesn’t want it to define the collection, do we believe it is gone for good?
      
      I was making the point that I think the former is a ridiculous claim (because if they want to end the hype they can make more) and the latter is probably a calculated move on the brand’s part that will see the steel Nautilus return to enormous fanfare in a couple of years.
