Wow. What a rollercoaster. There have been more back-and-forth tug-of-war contests in this World Cup than anyone saw coming. Thanks to thousands of voters, though, we now have our finalists locked and loaded and ready to roll. The Omega Speedmaster World Cup is just 7 days away from its conclusion and we need YOU to help us decide a winner.

When this World Cup began, I had high hopes for the format. Sports tournaments are real annual highlights for me and, in the absence of Euro 2020, I wanted to create something similar but with watches. We settled upon Speedmasters as a team, and what a choice that turned out to be!

We all had our favorites, but we didn’t necessarily get to argue for them (in such a big contest, compromise is necessary), and so many of us found ourselves cheering on would-be competitors from afar. The highlight of the contest for me so far, was the neck-and-neck battle twixt Bert and me in Quarter-Final 4. That tussle ended in a tie so we put both watches through to Semi-Final 2. You’ll find out how they fared against the Ed White further down the page, but first…

Semi-Final One: like a Dog with a bone…

Our sweet-scented and professionally pedicured leader has done it again. That’s right, RJ, the Prince of Pain, has inflicted an unholy beatdown on wee Michael. It really was a sickener to watch. The Snoopy 2015 leaped out to a commanding early lead, only for the Tintin to come racing back in response.

As it turns out, the Tintin’s unbelievable comeback was too good to be true. It seems some overeager Hergé fan in Paris had a slightly twitchy trigger finger and “accidentally” voted for the Tintin 200+ times…

…RJ marches on to the finals…

After we cleaned-up that blatant fraud, the contest ran far more smoothly, but the dog never let-up its laudable pace. It streaked towards the finish line and left the Tintin in its dust. That means Mikey Mike drops into the third-place play-off while RJ marches on to the finals, where he will face…

Semi-Final Two: Ed plays spoiler for the dreamed-of dogfight

With the Snoopy 2015 making the finals, many neutrals hoped the Snoopy III (championed by yours truly) would make it out of the three-way contest that was Semi-Final 2. The resulting dogfight would have been as interesting as it would have been thrilling, but alas, it is not to be.

…Omega is getting better…

The Snoopy III did pip the ST1 to second place in this group so it will drop into the third-place playoff against the Tintin. That contest will run tomorrow morning. Be sure to tune in to help either Mike or me over the line.

The final, however, will see Balazs take on our cruel-yet-cuddly commander in a bitter showdown that pits two undeniably classic watches against one another. Sure, you can call out the recency bias of two watches featuring in the final being products of the last 5 years, but let’s face it: Omega is getting better so it’s hardly a surprise.

What’s next…

We’re going to close voting on both the third-place playoff and the final on Friday 18th December at midnight CET. We’ll announce the winner on Saturday and then, on Sunday next, we’re going to run a comment article in which all competitors will regale the highs and the lows of the inaugural Omega Speedmaster World Cup from their perspectives.

Who will it be?

We need your votes. It would be great to see more (legal) votes cast in this final than ever before. The time has come for you to crown your Speedy winner. Who will it be? The Silver Snoopy 45th Anniversary watch from 2015, or the glittering 321-powered “Ed White” from 2020. Tune in tomorrow and Sunday to have your voice heard. Learn more about Omega here.
