It’s become increasingly hard, if not almost impossible, for brands to impress us with integrated-bracelet sport watches. There are only a handful that get it right from the start. With the Perception, the Sino-French brand Atelier Wen instantly created waves in 2022. It showed that not all great traditional watchmaking has to come from Switzerland. With a standout design and remarkable guilloché dials, Atelier Wen created a series that watch fans love. In late 2023, we saw the Perception V2, which showed some clever updates. Now, with the new Perception V3, Atelier Wen releases its biggest update yet. The new series gets an upgraded caliber, and the brand added a new finish to the lineup. The changes make this new Perception V3 the best of the series so far.

Atelier Wen’s take on a modern sports watch with an integrated bracelet immediately stood out in 2022 for several reasons that Dave perfectly explained. For me, the Perception’s case shape is a nice play on traditional designs within the category. On top of that, the hand-turned guilloché dials by Cheng Yucai’s workshop are a huge selling point. That said, I must admit that the Atelier Wen Millésime Perception Xuán with a pietersite dial that Mike wrote about earlier this year was a stunning alternative. When we had that watch in the office, I instantly fell in love with the watch’s unique look. But regardless of the dial variations, the Perception series always stands out to me whenever we have one in the office. On top of that, the watch sits perfectly on the wrist, making the Perception one of the best modern integrated-bracelet series currently available.

The updates of the Atelier Wen Perception V3

For its new Perception V3, Atelier Wen decided to update its popular series. The first and biggest change is the introduction of a new caliber. The brand’s French founders, Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron, decided to swap the Chinese Dandong SL1588A for the French-made Pequignet EPM03. It’s not the first time Atelier Wen has used this movement. The same one from the Morteau-based brand also powers the brand’s Ancestra series that Dave reviewed. On top of that, Atelier Wen used Girard-Perregaux’s GP03300 for its impressive Inflection series. So it might seem surprising at first, but the move away from Chinese movements has been ongoing for some time now.

But that is not the only update, even though it is the most notable. Atelier Wen also decided to add a new finish to the lineup. This new Yún version that we had in the office combines a Bamboo Green dial with a special micro-frosted finish with contrasting mirror-polished chamfers on the case and bracelet. It gives the watch a remarkable look that is rather different from the also-new blue-dial Piāo and the salmon-dial Xiá, which have a more classic mix of brushed and polished surfaces. The soft look and feel of the micro-frosted finish gives the steel a unique, modern look that reminds me of titanium.

The specs of the new Atelier Wen Perception V3

Let’s go over the details of the new Perception V3. The watches have the same 40mm 904L stainless steel case with a 10.4mm thickness and 47mm length. Though the new case is a millimeter thicker than the V2 due to the updated caliber, it is still very nice and slim. This is a result of the beautiful construction, with a slender, approximately 5mm-thick mid-case. The case back, bezel, and crystal make up the rest of the profile. Thanks to this construction, the Perception V3 looks much slimmer than its numbers might suggest.

The case is paired with the same integrated 22/18mm bracelet as previous Perception models. While its design remains the same, the new micro-frosted finish gives the watch a notably different look and feel. I adore the overall matte finish with the contrasting chamfers. These little visual sparkles always draw my eyes back to the watch.

The bracelet includes screw-fastened links and a really nice clasp that offers toolless micro-adjustment via a button with the brand’s logo. On top of that, the clasp features a telescopic deployant blade that reminds me of the clasp of my first-generation Omega Constellation Manhattan.

This special construction minimizes the clasp’s folded 2.6mm profile, essentially making it smaller while still keeping it easy to put the watch on the wrist. This latest version of the clasp shows a 0.4mm reduction in thickness compared to the previous version.

The special dials courtesy of Master Cheng

The three new models all feature the familiar hand-turned guilloché dials with an écailles de poisson (fish-scale) pattern, courtesy of Cheng Yucai’s workshop. Master Cheng has been praised for these special four-part dials inspired by ancient Chinese architectural tenets of Sunmao. The dials feature a Chinese huiwen-patterned chapter ring printed in white Super-LumiNova X1, which glows in the dark along with the lume-filled, leaf-shaped hour and minute hands. The applied rhodium-plated indexes are modest but perfectly sized to ensure maximum dial impact.

We have seen quite a few dial colors in the past four years, but I have to admit that this crisp green looks really nice. It resembles the jade-green dial of the Wristcheck × seconde/seconde/ × Atelier Wen Perception Special Edition from 2023. Out of the available options, this would be my pick. Especially in combination with the micro-frosted overall finish, it simply works very well.

The modified Peguinet EPM03

If you turn the watch around, you get a great view of the new Peguinet movement. Caliber EPM03 operates at 28,800 vph and offers a 65-hour power reserve. On top of that, it performs with chronometer-grade accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day, averaging within ±2 seconds. Those are impressive numbers and make the upgrade worth it performance-wise. On top of that, the caliber features hacking seconds, which is a first for the Perception.

But it gets even better because the decoration is something else. As we’ve come to expect from Atelier Wen, Chinese culture is integrated beautifully in the different parts of the watch. For the movement, this translates to a series of fan-shaped bridges filled with mirror-polished blue aventurine lacquer.

Additionally, the caliber features wavy Côtes de Genève on the escapement bridge, a 3D laser-etched inscription on the ratchet return wheel, black-polished screws, machine-made anglage and perlage, a snailed barrel, and a rotor with both snailing and frosting. The combination of all these finishing techniques creates a caliber that is wonderful to behold. It easily beats the automatic Dandong SL1588A, which was always mostly covered by the case back.

Wearing the Atelier Wen Perception V3

Once I put the Perception V3 on my wrist, I was happy and somewhat relieved to find that it still wears like an absolute dream. Despite the increased overall thickness, the watch still feels super slim and comfortable. On top of that, the bracelet wraps gently around the wrist, making the new Perception V3 an absolute joy to wear. The combination of the slender profile, the matte finish, and the relatively low weight sometimes made me think I was wearing a titanium watch. But for those who prefer the weight of stainless steel, I can assure you it has a nice bit of heft.

When you wear the watch, you also get a clear sense of the new finish’s impact. In particular, the bracelet’s chamfers reflect light beautifully. As a result, you will almost always see little shimmers of light in the corner of your eyes that immediately attract attention. As a result, I kept admiring the watch and moving my wrist to see all the little details that make it special. Some examples include the knurled screw-down crown, which features the same huiwen pattern as the dial, and the beautiful polished chamfers of the clasp.

It begs the question: is this the perfect integrated-bracelet sports watch for me? I have to admit that it comes frighteningly close. If there is one element I still have questions about, it’s the leaf-style hands. I have always wondered whether a slightly more modern handset would not benefit the overall design more. Then again, after wearing the updated Perception for a few days, I can honestly say it became less of an issue with every wear.

Final thoughts on the new Atelier Wen Perception V3

Overall, the Atelier Wen Perception V3 is a really impressive update that shows that a great watch series can get even better. With the new caliber from a well-respected French maker, Atelier Wen made a choice that many watch fans will love. On top of the impressive specs, the movement also looks stunning, which adds to the Perception’s storytelling. One thing I greatly appreciate about Atelier Wen, especially the Perception V3 series, is how it merges traditional Chinese culture and craftsmanship with European watchmaking to create watches that tell a unique story. For me, that adds an extra layer of appreciation and makes the watches stand out from the crowd.

That fusion of design and cultures has resulted in a distinctive series of watches that I love to wear. After spending a few days with the Atelier Wen Perception V3 Yún, I was nothing short of impressed. The design still feels fresh, the new dial color gives the watch an almost airy feel, and the finishing is downright beautiful. Admittedly, I do wonder how easily scratches will show on the micro-frosted surfaces, but that didn’t spoil any of the fun I had wearing the watch. The new finish brings an impressive version to the Perception lineup, and it just might be my new favorite of the updated series.

Atelier Wen Perception V3 Yún head on

A perfect example of a great update

The new Atelier Wen Perception V3 is now available for preorder on the brand’s official website for €4,200 / US$4,850. The first 300 pieces are expected to ship starting in September 2026. But since the new Perception V3 is a regular addition to the Atelier Wen lineup, the number of available pieces is not limited. Considering the incredible value you get for the money, I think this Atelier Wen Perception V3 is easily the best integrated-bracelet sports watch under €5,000. Even for double that budget, it would still be my pick. It simply is that good!
