Baselworld 2013 – Stainless Steel Rolex Yacht-Master II Reference 116680

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II 116680

For us, one of the nice surprises this last Baselworld was definitely the stainless steel Rolex Yacht-Master II ref. 116680. A few years ago, Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master II. It wasn’t a successor to the Yacht-Master ref. 16622 but an addition to the collection. While the Yacht-Master was connected with yachting, there was no specific feature of the watch that would support the men on boats. Except for being water resistant. The Yacht-Master II is one of the few Rolex watches with a ‘real’ complication besides a date feature. The regatta (countdown) chronograph will help skippers in the yachting competition to have a perfect start. In this article, we will tell you how it works.

Rolex Yacht-Master History

When Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master in 1992, a full gold version in 40mm. It wasn’t until 1999 that Rolex came up with the Rolesium Yacht-Master (stainless steel and platinum), reference (1)16622. The Yacht-Master II was introduced in 2007 and until now only available in gold and bi-color versions. More history on the Yacht-Master can be found here. It seems that Rolex waits with introducing the stainless steel versions of the Yacht-Master a models a few years after the initial introductions.

As written in the introduction, the Yacht-Master didn’t have any functionality for skippers. The functions were more or less the same as the Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller watches. A diving bezel (made out of platinum or gold though) and being water resistant. Even the movements are exactly the same.

Now, as you know, Rolex isn’t the company that creates complications for their watches other than the extra hour hand in their GMT and Explorer II watches and a chronograph movement in their Daytona watches. The Day-Date and Sky-Dweller have a bit of an extra feature regarding a day indicator and in case of the Sky-Dweller, an annual calendar with a clever bezel mechanism.

The Yacht-Master II is something different. Although it might appear as a normal chronograph at first, the inner scale with the 10 minute indicators and the bezel with large numerals counting down from 10 to 0 will reveal that something special is going on here.

Regatta Timer Explained

Although it looks kinda complicated in the specifications overview of the watch, it is a very easy to operate regatta timer actually. As you might know, in yacht racing you want to cross the line as soon as possible after the starting gun sounded. Before that, there will be an indication of X minutes before the start. 5 minutes is quite common but the countdown time can vary. Before 2000, it was 10 minutes. This is when you activate the chronograph on the Rolex Yacht-Master II ref. 116680. You will see that the inner scale will decrease per minute. Also, the countdown can be corrected on the fly so you can match it exactly to the official countdown timer.

Before the race, you will need to set the watch to the proper countdown time. This can be done by moving the bezel into setting mode, unscrew the crown and use the crown in order to change the big red arrow hand to the correct countdown number on the inner scale. Rotate the bezel back to the original (operation) position and screw the crown back into the case. Rolex calls this functionality of the bezel “RING COMMAND”.

Yacht-Master II 116680 Specifications

Like other Rolex sports watches, the Geneva watch house used their famous 904L stainless steel for this Yacht-Master II. The watch has all features that the former introduced Yacht-Master II with precious metals have as well. The movement received some updates though, as it is caliber 4161 instead of 4160. Our guess is that they embedded some of their more recent innovations in there. We will get you the details as soon as we know them.

The blue Cerachrom bezel matches the stainless steel perfectly, as well as the white lacquered dial. The bracelet (with the high polished center link) is also made out of 904L stainless steel and has the superb Rolex clasp. The Easylink system to adjust the bracelet with a few millimeters is perfect when the weather conditions change and you suddenly notice your watch is becoming strapped to tight on your wrists. Or too loose. With this new generation of Rolex clasps, adjusting is a piece of cake. This isn’t new of course, but we’re just saying it rocks Baselworld 2013 Stainless Steel Rolex Yacht Master II Reference 116680

The case is 44mm in size, which is exceptionally big for a Rolex watch. However, it certainly doesn’t wear too big nor is it an exceptional size in general. As you can see below on our wrist shot, the watch sits perfectly in place. Since skippers probably do not wear long sleeve shirts (like me on the picture), it is all fine.

Since it is the perfect watch to wear on a yacht (or at least near the beach), Rolex told us it will become available this summer. The price tag on this Yacht-Master II 116680 is 12.650 Euro (excluding VAT). A hefty price tag it may seem, but the regatta timer is a rather nifty complication. We can understand the price difference between the YMII and – let’s say – the normal Daytona chronograph timepiece.

Patek Philippe Introduces The Rose Gold Nautilus Chronograph 5980/1R – Live Pictures and Official Price

Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph 5980 in gold

Patek Philippe surprised us this year with an all gold Nautilus Chronograph reference 5980/1R and gold/steel combination of the watch as well (reference 5980/1AR). Although we feel that a Nautilus should be in stainless steel (unless you are Scott Disick), we actually could appreciate these gold versions of the iconic Genta timepiece.

Technically speaking, nothing changed compared to the stainless steel Nautilus 5980/1A model. Both have the automatic winding PP caliber 28-520 C movement with chronograph function with the hour and minute recorder in one sub counter. The central seconds hand is the chronograph hand. Things like the level of water resistance or the case diameter also remained the same. It is purely the used materials that changed. And what a change!

Superb Finish and Details

Just like all the other Nautilus models by Patek Philippe (did you read our post on the 3700/1A or 5711/1A already? or what to think of our Gerald Genta BBQ where we had several of them?), the level of finish is just amazing. The very subtle satin brushed pieces like the top of the bezel combines perfectly with the polished parts (side of the bezel, center links, facets on the lugs) and just plays with the light. With gold, this is perhaps even more the case.

The high number of brushed parts and subtle polished edges and parts make it a watch that has so many details to enjoy. It is actually a very difficult watch to capture on film (or in JPG of course) compared to the real life experience of the Nautilus. If you haven’t seen one in the flesh, make sure to visit a watch dealer who has them in stock in order to see what we are talking about. Our photographer Bert Buijsrogge did a nice job during our appointment with Patek Philippe in Basel to capture the new Nautilus Chronograph watches in the best possible way.

The Patek Philippe Nautilus Chrono 5980/1R retails for 68.870 Euro

Gold/Steel Nautilus Chrono 5980/1AR

Another surprise was the gold/steel Nautilus Chronograph reference 5980/1AR that was shown to us during our meeting with Patek Philippe. Although we’re not a big fan of this combination in most cases, this Patek definitely falls into the exceptions category. Like a beautiful lady that can just wear anything and still looks wonderful, this Patek Philippe Nautilus seems to be able to be stunning in any material. Of course, like we wrote before in this article, you should really see it in the flesh before judging this timepiece. With regards to specifications, it is equal to the other 5980 references. Only the weight is different to the all gold model and the all stainless steel model.

Oh, and the price of course. This Nautilus Chrono 5980/1AR retails for 50.500 Euro.

Speedy Tuesday – True Story About The New Speedmaster Racing

Speedmaster 311.30.42.30.01.004

Remember our post about the Speedmaster Racing a few weeks ago? Well, there’s more to it! During our appointment with Jean Claude Monachon (Head of Product Development) of OMEGA we’ve heard the true story about the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional 311.30.42.30.01.004 ‘Racing’ that was introduced during Baselworld 2013.

Speedy Tuesday True Story About The New Speedmaster Racing

Tintin – Destination Moon

Tintin Destination Moon (or Objectif Lune) is the 16th comic album of Hergé’s Tintin series. It was written 19 years before the Moonlanding (Apollo 11 in 1969) and 8 years before the first manned space flight (Yuri Gagarin). The story about Tintin, Haddock and professor Calculus continues in the next album, “Explorers on the Moon” (1954). Unlike the real deal (Saturn V), their rocket stays in one piece and a flight to the Moon is just a matter of hours (instead of days).

Speedy Tuesday True Story About The New Speedmaster Racing

OMEGA’s Head of Product Development Jean Claude Monachon explained that the red and white design of the Speedmaster Professional ref. 311.30.42.30.01.004 was based on the colors of the rocket in the Tintin comic albums.

What you don’t see on the new Speedmaster Professional ‘Racing’ is the rocket itself. The original prototype of the watch also had this famous Tintin rocket (as can be seen above) on the dial. OMEGA took the design of this Tintin homage to the publisher of these comic albums and proposed the production of a ‘Tintin Speedmaster’. The publisher of Tintin unfortunately didn’t agree with it and the plan was off the table. OMEGA removed the rocket from the dial design and decided to make this a new ‘Racing’. Now you know.

Speedy Tuesday True Story About The New Speedmaster Racing

Although there is a lot of Tintin merchandise (perhaps even watches), an iconic watch such as the Moonwatch would be the ideal homage timepiece to the Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon comic albums. I am not sure why Tintin would say no to this, I can only take a few guesses.

However, if you are a Tintin fan or ‘Moon programme’ fan, you might want to think about this watch anyway before it is out of the collection again. The unfinished Tintin Speedy could become a sought-after collectible now that the word is out. Perhaps we should stop calling it the ‘Racing’ and using something with Tintin instead. In any case, we (Team Fratello) actually like the red/white checkered Speedmaster Professional. More than we would have thought when seeing the first product picture on the official OMEGA website.

Have a nice Speedy Tuesday!
