TAG Heuer Goes Full Throttle With The Monaco Speed 12
TAG Heuer is staying true to its motorsport heritage while pushing its horological boundaries with the introduction of the Monaco Speed 12 at the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Grand Prix de Monaco 2026. This limited edition of 50 pieces brings racetrack adrenaline to the wrist. It features 12 rotating pistons that indicate the hours, driven by the central minute hand. Thanks to the new TH84-00 caliber developed in collaboration with La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, this reinterpretation of the jumping-hour complication evokes a 12-cylinder engine, a fitting tribute to the Monaco GP.
The (TAG) Heuer Monaco is arguably one of the most recognizable and iconic collections in the watch world. Introduced in 1969 with an unconventional left-sided crown and the automatic caliber 11, it has been known as “Steve McQueen’s watch” since he wore it in the 1970 film Le Mans. Today, drivers like Max Verstappen dominate the racetrack, while TAG Heuer, as the official Formula 1 timekeeper, continues to bridge the gap between motorsport and watchmaking. With the Monaco Speed 12, the brand pushes further into high watchmaking while staying true to its racing DNA.
The new TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12 — A cool beast
The Monaco Speed 12 is a 40mm jumping-hour beast. Its signature square case, here in Grade 5 titanium, signature square case houses 12 rhodium-plated, sandblasted, and brushed rotating pistons with engraved Arabic numerals. In the center lies a skeletonized minute hand with a red-lacquered tip, rotating over a black opaline minute ring. All of this hovers over an openworked dial, allowing you to explore the intricate details of the caliber beneath. Topping the lightweight yet robust case is a domed box-type sapphire crystal, while a titanium and sapphire case back frames the round movement suspended by four DLC-coated arches.
This watch is built on forward-thinking design. And if I haven’t made it clear already, it’s meant to make you feel like you’re peeking under the hood of a finely tuned supercar. The openworked dial is a projection of the finishing and engineering of engine blocks, while the vertical grooves at the center of the dial resemble high-performance engine covers. The skeletonized central minute hand could perfectly fit on a dashboard instrument. Every element reinforces the watch’s connection to motorsport, and the red accents on the dial and strap highlight it even more.
The 12-cylinder jump-hour movement
This timepiece was created in collaboration with Louis Vuitton’s La Fabrique du Temps manufacture. Its master watchmakers, Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini, developed and produced the new caliber TH84-00. The movement builds upon the patented Spin Time mechanism. This shared effort has allowed TAG Heuer to unite its racing-inspired vision with the manufacture’s expertise in high-complication movements to create a mechanism capable of a precise 90° turn for each piston as the minute hand completes a full rotation. The previous piston naturally returns to its initial stance, resulting in a dynamic display of time.
Final thoughts
The TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12 will make its debut during the 2026 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. This is a fitting stage for such an important release. The watch is a limited edition of 50 pieces, paying tribute to the defining thrill, precision, and passion of the brand and its involvement in the sport. Furthermore, the Monaco Speed 12 is an avant-garde and futuristic project, both visually and mechanically. This is a huge step forward from anything McQueen-Monaco related, but it’s very much in line with everything Verstappen represents. The watch will be available starting this December at an estimated price point of CHF 70,000 / €77,000 / US$87,000.
The TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12 is a natural evolution of the brand’s high-watchmaking projects. At Watches and Wonders 2026, for example, the brand introduced the Monaco Evergraph with the compliant mechanism (caliber TH80-00) that completely reinvents how the chronograph functions. So neither this impressive jumping hour nor any boundary-pushing future projects should come as a surprise. This is the result of LVMH brands working together. The shared expertise of La Fabrique du Temps and the TAG Heuer Lab, in this instance, is what makes this release so special.
