Daytona Ausverkauf

Since a few months, perhaps even a year, I noticed that the stainless steel Rolex Daytona seems to loose its status as ‘most wanted’. There still has to be paid more than list price to get one, but the difference is getting smaller and smaller. List price is a bit over 6000 Euro, and the going price is around 7500 euro. Still crazy enough to be the most wanted, but the waiting list is becoming shorter and there are plenty of them around on the sales corners of r-l-x and other forums. The gold/steel models have always been easier to get, but they are already available on the ‘used market’ for a mere 5600 Euro. That’s even less than a new stainless steel model.

Both are out of my league currently, so I might focus on a Rolex that seems to be more and more ‘in the picture’. A nice Rolex OysterQuartz Date-Just ref.17013 or ref.17014. I was stupid enough to sell my first 17013… Another classic, but more expensive option, is a vintage Day-Date in white gold. Anyway, that will be close or even on par with a stainless steel Daytona. I will have to wait to -at least- end of the year :-) My latest, a Rolex GMT-Master II, is still fresh and consuming most of the ‘wrist time’.

Have a nice weekend all!!

Kill Bill Vol.2

Yesterday, I finally watched volume 2 of Kill Bill. The first part was great in my opinion, and the second part is nice, but not great. In fact, the only reason to see it is to finally witness how Bill is being Killed.

Anyway (to keep it on-topic), in part two I noticed this Rolex Daytona she (Uma Thurman) uses to check her predictor-stick. At first I thought it was cool that she has such a nice masculine watch. Later on, when I examined the still images on my PC, it was clearly a fake Daytona. What a bummer.

Generation Digital

Two days ago, I turned 29 years old (to help you out, I was released in 1977). When I was a young kid, I remember getting a hand wound watch from my parents. But I never wore it. It had a small round case and a canvas strap. My first ‘real’ watch that I really wore was a Casio. It was in the time of the first G-Shocks. But these G-Shock models were too big for my little wrists (I was a skinny little kid, almost hard to believe now.. :-)). I also remember getting my first Casio as well. My parents bought it from me when we were on a holiday in the UK. I think they had it for sale at Dixons. Not sure though. I still have it, and it even runs perfectly. After that first Casio, I had some more digital watches. I also remember that I always looked at watches from other kids. One of my friends had one with a video game. Another one had one which could measure your pulse rate. And I still remember buying a digital watch featuring a calculator. Everyone had one. Anyway, when it became 1989 or something, I needed a Swatch. And that was the end of my Casio era :-)

A few years back (2003), I bought this Casio G-Shock re-edition. It is a ‘re-edition’ of the first model G-Shock. Exactly the same one as I witnessed in the windows of ‘Dixons’ (or similair store) in the UK. With a bit of help of the G-Shock Forum, I pushed myself to buy this one. I think I paid a mere 150 USD for it.

So I now have 2 Casio watches. My first original one, and this re-edition of the G-Shock. I probably have more of them in a box at my father’s house somewhere, but I am not going to look for them anyway :-)

Anyway, maybe because I am from the Digital Generation :-), but I always have a weakness for nice digital watches. Although I probably will never buy them (the 150 USD was more then enough to spend for me on a digital watch), I really like the Omega Speedmaster X-33 for instance. Or the Breitling Aerospace on a brown leather croco strap. Also, the Seamaster series from the early eighties called ‘Multifunction’ were quite nice.

Recently, I started to like the digital Ventura watches. The design is original, and the scroll button is quite intuitive. However, at a starting price around 1000 USD, I will leave this one alone as well. It would probably end up in the same drawer as my two other digital watches. Although you never know…

Dickie’s Day Downtown

‘Dickie’ had some hours to spend and was up to some serious watch shopping. He ended up ordering an IWC Portugieser in blue, but also tried various other watch brands. Like the one below. A Cartier Tank a Vis.

Besides Basel 2006

Besides the Basel 2006 Expo, there was the SSIH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie) in Geneva. Like the following article says, a Richemont show :-)

Alexandre Ghotbi and Alberto Schileo made a nice essay on the SSIH 2006 in Geneva. You can read it here.

Tag Heuer eyeglasses

Tag Heuer recently introduced their eyeglasses. They already had some very nice sun glasses in their collection, but it seems that there was market for more ‘Vision’ products. I have to admit that I was impressed by them… looked good and reasonably priced.

Watch polishing and reviews

John Holbrook mailed me that he had written some articles that might interest us (poster and readers of Fratello :-)). The first one is an article about watch polishing with the help of this magical stuff from Cape Cod.

You can find the review here

John also writes for watch magazines in the US. He did a review of a nice Panerai for InSync here (it is a PDF!). And for Chronos, you can find a complete Holbrook report if you click right here. The Holbrook report contains a lot of different watches. Different brands and styles, certainly worth checking out!

Have fun!
