Thin Is Hot! AP's Latest News Is Not About Off-Shores For A Change

Just like Vacheron Constantin, Ralph Lauren (Piaget), Jaeger-LeCoultre (Master Ultra-Thin) and probably some others, Audemars Piguet is trying to address the more conservative watch consumers with their new line-up of very thin watches.

Audemars Piguet introduces a new member of the Jules Audemars collection, the Extra Thin ref.15180. It is based on their historical model ref. 5271 and is 6.7mm in height. The 18ct rose gold case measures 41mm x 6.7mm. It has two sapphire crystals and is water resistant to 20 meters (this does not mean it likes to take a swim, it protects against rain drops).

The thickness of a watch is for a large part depending on the dimensions of the (mechanical) movement inside. Since 1967, Audemars Piguet relies on a movement that they are using in license of Jaeger-LeCoultre, caliber 920.

This movement is better known was caliber 2120 (or 2121 for the version with a date function) and has been used in various watches by the company in Le Brassus, including the Royal Oak ref.15202 ‘Jumbo’ (which has been covered here a lot of times).

Caliber 2120 is also being used as a base caliber for timepieces with complications, such as the Jules Audemars Perpetual Calendar.

This movement is considered to be the finest automatic mechanical movement out there, and has a Gyromax balance, very nice Cotes de Geneva finish, circular grained main plate and so on. I did some explanation on movement finishing a wile ago, click here to read it.

Price unknown yet, be prepared to pay at least over 15K eur.
